About me: Derek Dufresne is a completely self taught artist. Started experimenting as a teenager with homemade and eventually a professional machine. Putting the machines down to pursue a career in music. He is an accomplished bass guitarist and songwriter, and started playing the clubs when he was only 16. He has shared the stage with many major label recording acts. But he soon rediscovered his love of tattooing. He has been tattooing professionally now over 10 years and prefers to work on large scale, Japanese influenced tattoos, and realism. Travels North America extensively tattooing at numerous conventions and guest spots. Also proficient in watercolor paints, pencilcrayon, and markers. He is a husband and father of 3 kids
Dufresne moved west from Winnipeg, Manitoba and opened Fleshworks in 1999. It started as a small one man shop in the interior of British Columbia, Canada. It is now one of the most highly publicized studios in Canada. Derek and his wife Beth packed up and moved the studio to Victoria on Vancouver Island in 2003 Tattoo collectors travel from across Canada, the USA and abroad to get tattooed here.
They spared no expense putting this studio together. A store front "street shop" with a private studio atmosphere. Designed to make the clients feel comfortable and relaxed. There’s pond right in the front room as you walk in filled with beautiful Koi and waterfall. Spacious comfortable waiting area. Big wide screen plasma tvs with dvd, satellite tv and surround sound for clients to watch movies to help the time go by and take their mind off the pain while getting tattooed. Also, a cd/ mp3 stereo system, Wii system for wireless gaming, and a huge dvd library.
The studio has been awarded “Nicest Tattoo Studio” 2 years in a row by The National Tattoo Association.
Derek has published a book of line drawings titled “Japanese Tattoo Designs”. This is not a sketchbook, but a perfect bound book of 100 pages of Japanese tattoo designs drawn in the artists unique style. Ready to be tattooed as is or just used for inspiration.
He is releasing an instructional DVD (for sale to artists only!) in July 2009. The DVD has 2 tattoos start to finish recorded up close and in your face! And boasts a killer soundtrack by The Quazimotors, Nashville Pussy, Rockets To Ruin, Crystal Pistol, Cornbugs and more. Sure to be a great package!
