Mixed with Cajun and Irish roots, Americana singer-songwriter Derek Toomey grew up in Central Louisiana, where many a Sunday when he wasn't catching crawfish in the bayou near his grandparents' farmhouse, he was singing along to their Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn and Beatles records. Derek's soon-to-be-released debut CD "Kiss on the Wind" is a blend of those iconic musical influences with a bit of pop, folk, rock and even swamp.
Derek's voice, like blackberries tangled on rusted barbed wire, is organic and rough around the edges, yet honest enough to evoke raw emotion. It is in the storytelling and songwriting, though, where the Atlanta-based musician stands out. Whether it's an infectious rhythm that makes you want to use your dashboard as a drum, or a haunting lyric that sticks in your head, his words and melodies are written to move you -- the way he was moved to create them.
Renowned accordionist Jo-EL Sonnier, whose songs Tear-Stained Letter and No More One More Time took him to the top of the country charts, lends his musical genius to the track "Evangeline." Enjoy listening, and stay tuned for the album release of "Kiss on the Wind" featuring 11 eclectic tunes!
