Derrick grew up in the town of Dacula, Georgia where he always had a passion for music. His inspiration-- the boredom that ensues at 3AM when everyone else in the house is asleep (he is slightly nocturnal). He taught himself guitar and piano in high school, and began writing songs shortly thereafter. After 2 years at UGA, he dropped out to produce with and learn from grammy nominated producers in Atlanta. After passing on a record deal (stupid mother truckers who want to rob you of your soul) he came back to UGA and entered the UGA Music Business Program. Since then he has been interning with Producer John Keane, and writing, playing all of the instruments on, and recording songs from…. His house. A one man band of sorts, he is the song soon to be stuck in your head!
I am writing with Justin Brogdon tomorrow and maybe after that Brantley and Mike Dekle. I will definately have to write with "the Derrick Southerland" soon! A show would be awesome too!
