"I could tell you that DER SPAZM sounds a bit like the Pixies or Sonic Youth, but then you'd put this article down thinking that they sound JUST like the Pixies or JUST like Sonic Youth. I don't want to hand you a wrong idea about them. While this is a band that wears some of their influences on their sleeves, Der Spazm is far from the type of band that dresses in their hero's clothes. Too many art-rock (if that's indeed what they are) bands think that by being indistinguishable from their idols they're somehow doing something new and unfamiliar. But even black sheep are still just sheep. Der Spazm excels at not being anything but themselves. Dillon on guitar and vocals, Leticia on guitar, Jonny 13 on drums, and Ashely on bass and backing vocals aren't following blue prints for art/punk or post punk rock music."
"You need to witness their sound yourself. Sometimes words can't get across what the music sounds like without doing it a great injustice.....this bands music sparks in the dark!"

With all the different stories behind the origins of band names, I can't help but be curious as to how Sacramento band Der Spazm got theirs - the result of a random selection from a German dictionary, perhaps? Either way, the four-piece band has touches of Sonic Youth and Joy Division in their sound, and that's something I can't argue with.

There's a little bit of garage punk, a lit of Elvis Presley and a hint of Jello Biafra in the sounds of Der Spazm. And while they sound like they recorded their songs in Osama bin Laden' s cave, using the walls as drums and shoelaces for guitar strings, there's certainly some Sonic Youth within the scratched-up innards of Der Spazm's body. Songs such as "Compulsion" - with a driving bass line, snarly, confident lyrics and playful guitar - show a band that is unafraid to tackle pop music with originality and edge...."

A free Der Spazm show is pretty much the equivalent of Jesus buying you a drink at the bar. You can't say no. It gets better too - Jesus likes your band tattoos and says he's down to smoke you out while listening to Sonic Youth".
