  • Bio

In 2003 the brothers Mike and Barry Kehoe stood in the middle of Joshua Tree National Park at the shrine dedicated to the memory of Gram Parsons. It was on or near this location that Gram had been cremated. As they stood at the base of a great sandstone boulder scribbled with messages of hope and loss, the silence was torn apart by a silver fighter jet as it buzzed the brothers and flew away across the clear blue sky. They stood there in awe and appreciation of the memory of one of country musics lost and lamented sons and knew that they had a mission to fulfill. They took the name inspired by the desert fly boys and went forth to form a Country Rhythm and Roots sensation. On returning to Dublin they went to a Dirk Powell concert where they met the Banjo man and folk singer Pete McGuire. Shortly after this they gathered many musicians to jam and session with and produced their first album of Bluegrass, Old Time and Rhythm n' Roots tunes with the help of Darren Hurley and Camille Champarnaud called: "Spades dig, hearts break, diamonds shine, clubs just beat it." More recently the Aces have been joined by Graham Nolan on Banjo and fiddle and the accomplished singer songwriters Aoife Moriarty and Sarah Baldwin. Desert Aces have played extensively in venues throughout Ireland and abroad. Certain band members have even been known to turn up performing in unusual places like Thailand, New Zealand, Continental Europe and the USA. In Ireland they have performed at the the Kilkenny Rhythm n' Roots Festival, the International Bluegrass Festival in Dunmore East, the St Patricks Festival in Waterford City and in 2008 they were invited to headline the American Ambassadors 4th of July party in the Phoenix Park. Their debut album received high praise from both the Irish Times music critic Siobhan Long and the presenter of Lyric FM's Grace Notes, Ellen Cranitch . Desert Aces play a mix of high octane bluegrass standards, original songs and county trad songs that have been known to cause perfectly good, sensible and decent people to leap about stomping their boots and hollering like lunatics.
