"The Oracle marks the debut for Despirator, a project of Renee Ilardi and Matt Collins, also a member of New York's veteran act Neuroplague. This is not a side project of Neuroplague, but rather a new impressive release that is difficult to categorize. The Oracle is a well-written and produced "darkwave" project, but it is filled with exotic textures and a feeling of fantasy within its music and lyrics. Traditional qualities of the gothic world are here as far as instrumentation, but it is the melodious synth structures and programming along with well-crafted unobstructed female vocals that give this release its strength. The mood of The Oracle shifts gently from old world sounds to darkwave, ethereal-goth, the edge of pop, and even a jazzy interlude on "Descend." Most notable are the tracks "Rain," "In One Breath," "Rupture," and "Deadfall" co-written with Colin Schwen of Porcupine Defense and Terminal Sect. This is truly an original release that is worth checking out."

"One of the newest in a (very) small crop of bands blending edgy electronics, with soft female vocals and an overall mystical edge that the gothic scene is enamored by of late...The main problem I have with this genre is that all too often when employing a softer and more subtle vocal styling, any failings in the singer's vocal ability that are often hidden on more aggresive and harsh vocal styles are more easily detected. But, thankfully, Renee Ilardi, the bands singer and main motivator, never lets me down. She, along with Matt Collins of aggro-industrial outfit Neuroplague, have succeeded in creating a rich and thick CD."

"Despirator is the goth/darkwave project of Renee Ilardi and Matt Collins... this is a very good album. There are elements here of traditional goth (ie: guitar, bass guitar) and melodic string structures. There are also some synth and keyboard parts thrown in. The female vocals are executed very well... Heavy, distorted guitar is thrown in occasionally, and the album breaks away from the depressed, "I want to kill myself" mood most gothic bands embrace. Despirator is a breath of fresh air for the gothic scene. Kudos to Primordial and Despirator for producing this. Trust me, even if you hate goth, you may want to at least give this a listen. You may be surprised."

"One of the better albums to come out for a while, the Oracle storms through your consciousness with more loops than an old nintendo game...a clever blend of blues, goth, classical, world music and industrial. The dark overtones on each song are created with spooky deep bass offset with higher-pitched quicker winding notes and layers of sometimes harsh, sometimes soft female vocals. Obviously accomplishing what they were trying to do, I love the fact that I was thinking of stairs before I read the song title Descend. This CD will appeal to fans of Waiting for God, Collide and Battery, although you couldn't liken the band to any of those in particular."

"A strong debut from this female-fronted darkwave/electronic hybrid. DESPIRATOR skirt and blur the edges of several styles, forming a very ear-pleasing mixture. The softly melodic vocals of Renee Ilardi are without the usual goth-styled pretensions, and the music is a well-done and well-produced mesh of live instruments and programming. Aspects of everything from harder post-industrial dance to exotic ambient textures to even synthpop creep into the mix, but nothing really neatly fits into a certain genre. And beautiful cover art and designwork as well. A fine album."
