well I don't have any actual practice in mastering. there is some theory to it that I've picked up from reading magazines. basically you're going to take each track, clearn them up individually as much as you can. for example, if there is hum from an amplifier, but there is a part where the bass guitar stops playing for 1 second, you can turn down the volume at that spot. or you can use a filter which removes specific frequencies from the sound, and focus on the frequency of the hum. so after all the tracks are re-recorded as cleaned up as much as possible, you are going to use EQ and filters so that there isn't too much overlap of sounds on the same frequencies.. too many instruments at the same frequencies will sound muddy and unclear. blah.. anyway.. there has to be a book on this somewhere! lol.. its a LOT OF WORK. you have to spend ages re-listening to the same songs over and over again. and its takes lots of practice to stop sucking. and you have to be really careful not to fuck up your hearing. fortunately, it can be done with a normal computer. if you just have the patience to spend the time, a good ear, and a good sense of what its supposed to sound like, and the right software.. it can be done. oh.. and you have to listen to the recording in lots of different environments, and go back to the studio, over and over until it sounds great in all environments. and then obviously you can't make it sound over processed or else it won't be riotgrrl anymore but pop music. yeah.. so.. anyway... I don't know what book to recommend. but I bet there is one.
and since you use a computer and you keep old copies of everything .. you can always go back if you fuck it up and try it again.
the only indy bands I know that seem to release things are the ones who learn how to self master, or are personal friends with a technician who loves them. I don't think anyone can afford to pay for it to be done.
Thanks for the add, you're right you snuggly lil battlers dont suck! Good luck with stuff, hopefully you guys will get some attention so you can make better recordings, I like the music but Id like to hear it better, or worse as the case may be, I dont know. Anyway, yeah.
a cd sounds cool. I'm mostly a gothrock/postpunk dj. but I spin bands like bikini kill, and machetes (from toronto). so destitute would fit in as well. I like the sound.
