Fear Is A Mind Killer
Independent
"Adelaide metal outfit Deafening Silence released an EP (‘Destruction Is Creation’) back in 2005 but since that time a significant proportion of the band have turned over. New album ‘Fear Is A Mind Killer’ doesn’t quite sound like a different band, but it does mark a significantly enhanced and improved version.
Deafening Silence are, by and large, purveyors of modern metal with reference points that include Soilwork, In Flames, Shadowfall and perhaps just a dash of Metallica circa ‘Master Of Puppets’. In ‘Fear Is A Mind Killer’ they have delivered a remarkably self -assured piece of work. The band are well down the path of establishing their own unique sound and identity, and explore plenty of interesting ideas throughout the eight tracks on offer here.
Thick grooves and great hooks abound, particularly on the blistering Walk Alone and Entrapment, a song that for me also brings to mind Tool’s Stinkfist. Guitarists Mickey Bethune and Josh Grieger also contribute plenty of fine solos, and while his clean vocals are a work in progress, on the whole Andy Walters is an excellent modern metal singer. With passion and aggression in spades, he particularly excels himself on the raging Die To Survive and Revenge Collector. The standout for me amongst a very even group of songs is the closer Art Of War. An epic, brooding track it steadily builds in atmosphere and intensity before ending with a stunning guitar solo and fading out with some very tasteful piano.
The production (by the band themselves) is very good, delivering a crisp and even sound without diluting the power of the music, and ‘Fear Is A Mind Killer’ is a quality release from yet another quality local band."
