Well folks here’s the e-mail I’ve been dreading writing, but...
... on November 1st, after 11-1/2 years Detour, everyone’s favorite jazz club just around the corner, will be changing hands.
That’s right Art and Evan are moving on to other adventures, (not that we know what they are yet), and the music scene in New York will be just a little bit sadder. We want to thank everyone who has made Detour the special place it has become. A club is only as good as it’s performers, staff and customers and we have been fortunate enough to have had some of the very best in the city!
Over 4000 live shows, countless kegs of Guinness and Yuengling consumed , 10+ couples meeting and marrying, countless nights of sublime and ridiculous fun, and all with less than 20 bartenders in 11 years!
Detour has always been about the Music and the People and we have done our best to foster both. I can proudly say that our customers have been the best and most loyal, the Musicians the finest and most creative and the staff has always made us proud.
Detour is located at 349 East 13th Street (between 1st Ave-2nd Ave) New York City (212) 533-6212
This page is now a bit of a Detour memorial site. Please support live jazz whenever you can. There still exist a few venues to hear the talent that graced Detour. Downtowners, try Bar 55, Small's or Fat Cat. Do it. Let's pretend that this is still New York City. Get on the musicians' mailing lists. Keep it going.
Detour opened in 1995 with a strong mission to bring live traditional and experimental jazz to the East Village in a non-pretentious and relaxed atmosphere. Detour has earned the reputation of being one of the finest and well-liked jazz venues in New York City.
As the only true cover-free jazz club (most nights), Detour offered musicians -- and the audience -- an opportunity to improvise and grow — to feel at liberty to take chances they might not have considered taking at other venues.
