We welcome donations year-round to help us fulfill our mission - to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.
We would like to thank everybody for their support of the 17th Annual Komen Detroit Race for the Cure®, locally presented by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. Thanks to your help, we had an outstanding race once again! This year a crowd of over 30,000 women, men, and children ran, walked, or wheeled through the streets of Midtown Detroit on May 30 with the same mission: to eradicate breast cancer. Included in this crowd were nearly 1,500 breast cancer survivors and over 400 teams who brought a great amount of spirit to the Race. We are also proud to recognize the Race Planning Committee and the fabulous group of more than 1,200 volunteers without whom the Race would not be possible.
With the help of our friends, participants, sponsors and volunteers, we raised over $2 million allowing us to grant local breast cancer screening, treatment and education programs; and contribute to Susan G. Komen for the Cure's breast cancer research grant program.
Thanks to all of our volunteers who made things happen. Volunteers are needed throughout the year in various capacities. If you are interested in volunteering for the Komen Detroit Race for the Cure®, please send your name, contact information and availability to raceforthecure@karmanos.org. Please indicate briefly the skills you have to offer.

I just want to take a minute to point out to everyone that there is a rare type of breast cancer called inflammatory breast cancer (IBC); it doesn't grow in a lump thus typically is missed in self-exams and mammograms and ultrasounds! It appears as a red swollen breast; other symptoms are inverted nipple, pitted skin, discharge from nipples, pimple or "bug bite". It is frequently misdiagnosed as a bug bite or infection; thus post-poning treatment until it's too late. Most doctors have never seen it, they've just read about it in medschool.
IBC is a "stage IV" cancer (stage IIIb or IV; it almost always invades the lymph nodes) and is extremly aggressive. It has about a 40% 5-year survival rate! I have three more years till I tackle that milestone and I can't wait! Since my cancer was so advance I will never be cured and will always require treatment; but I'm enjoying being disease free and plan on staying there!

MySpace wiped out Dawn’s account on Tuesday. We had built her page up to 35,000 friends. We would ask that you spread the word as to what happened to see if we can get some of Dawn’s friends back before her Video is released.
There will be aspects of Dawn’s video that have never been done in a music video before. And probably will never happen again. As unique and special of a person Dawn was to those who knew her.
Our goal was to make this video a reflection of those same qualities that Dawn possessed. As well as sending a message as it relates to cancer.
MySpace may have killed the number of people Dawn’s video will reach. And even though Dawn is no longer be with us. We won’t like MySpace kill her spirit.
Thanks again,
Dawn's Family and Friends

Together we can defeat the Beast once and for all. Victory is close. I can feel it. We just need to run a little more.
