   About Devils in Disguise
Press

"WUSC closes out its Music Fest with an Americana show on Sunday at Art Bar. Local Clash-loving Americana punks Sons of Young headline; they’re riding off of the release of Stories in the Soil, their second EP of the year. Speaking of this year’s releases, Devils in Disguise, which owns one of the year’s finest in Honky Tonk Liftoff, also play."
- From "The Playlist - WUSC FM's Fall Fundraiser" by Patrick Wall from the Columbia Free Times, Issue 21.45 :: 11/05/2008 - 11/11/2008

"Gram Parsons spoke, Devils in Disguise listened — the honky-tonkin’ Columbia quartet plays an enticing brand of proto-country-rock akin to the cosmic American music penned by the Grievous Angel. For my money, it doesn’t get much better on the Devils’ long-player Honky Tonk Liftoff than "Dagger," a sweltering revenge tale that’s perfect for a shadowy, simmering Carolina night. But with more uptempo and jam-friendly tunes such as "Honky Tonk Hippie" and "Front Porch Light" dotting the record, we’re sure you can cut a rug or two out on Utopia’s open porch."
- From "Sound Bytes: The Choir Quit, American Gun, Yndi Halda" by Patrick Wall from the Columbia Free Times, Issue 21.33 :: 08/13/2008 - 08/19/2008

"With the late, great alt-country-friendly magazines (i.e. No Depression, Harp) that would have eaten up the Gram Parsons-inspired country-rock jamming on their debut disc Honky-Tonk Liftoff becoming so much roadkill on the information superhighway, the chances of Columbia’s Devils in Disguise being recognized as the next International Submarine Band are slim. That doesn’t make their Carolina country any less appropriate for a night of beer-drinking and hell-raising..."
- From "Sound Bytes: Baumer, Col. Bruce Hampton, Lach" by Keith Oliver from the Columbia Free Times, Issue 21.20 :: 05/14/2008 - 05/20/2008

"There’s a reason country-fried Columbians Devils in Disguise have played the annual Gram Parsons tribute show in his hometown of Waycross, Ga., more than once: Honky Tonk Liftoff, the new record from these local Parsons disciples, delivers on their claim to be modern-day purveyors of the late Byrds' and Burrito Brothers' "Cosmic American Music," with a blend of honky-tonk and jam-friendly country rock on songs such as "Honky Tonk Hippie," "Front Porch Light" and "Ghost of Carolina."
- From "Sound Bytes: Blue Man Group, The Black Dahlia Murder and More" by Keith Oliver from the Columbia Free Times, Issue 21.10 :: 03/05/2008 - 03/11/2008

"This Gram Parsons-loving band of weekend warriors knows their country music, and it's not the kind you hear on the radio much anymore. Merle Haggard, George Jones, Buck Owens and the Rolling Stones' forays into twang are the obvious starting points for the group's original tunes, while their history as a classic country and rock n' roll cover band...provides plenty of well-worn and time-tested material for audiences to sing along with."
- From "Sound Bites: Music Reviews" from the Columbia Free Times, July 12-18, 2006

"Devils in Disguise used to be known as a pretty cool little cover band... They've now branched out and are writing some excellent original songs. Like most good bands, they are at their best when they play live."
- Mark Lyvers, aka Uncle Gram, host of WUSCs Red Bank Bar and Grill show

"Columbia, S.C.-based four-piece Devils in Disguise started life in the late '90s as a covers band (offering their take on songs by Zevon, Earle and Reed--Lou, not Jimmy) with the name Gunrack. Coiniciding with the change in moniker, the band started incorporating original country-jam material, positioning them as a cross between spiritual godfather Gram Parsons and Widespread Panic."
- From "Get Out: Music worth leaving the house to hear this week," from the Independent Weekly, February 23, 2005

About the Band/History of

Devils in Disguise takes you back to a point in time where the honky-tonk business was nothing more than a reflection of everyday life, slapback was the preferred reverb and dusty streets led dual-ply tires down new journeys of discovery, heartache, joy and sadness. Chrome seemed to shine a little brighter and folks always threw up a hand to say "howdy" as you passed. In this modern world in which we live, Devils in Disguise want to take you on a journey of heartache and hope for finding that place in life we all can call home. Songs reminiscent of Gram Parsons, the Everly Brothers, George Jones, Merle Haggard, the Rolling Stones early '70's work and a few others pop up on the radar when the band plays shows. Sure, they dont have any problems with the more modern influences and technologies in life -- vacuum tubes and e-lectronic guitars are part of the band's equipment list. Transistors and modern-day technologies may have passed some of these boys by, but they've become quite proficient at communicating via e-lectronic mail, so drop them a message to let them know how much you like old-time honky tonk music, songs about life, love, lost love and the ever-constant battle with one's demons of the past and future.

The band officially formed in 2003 when brothers-in-law David Hane and Julian Cochran picked up the pieces of a former cover band project called Gunrack and decided to start writing their own songs while paying tribute to some of the honky tonk greats along the way. David brought a wealth of musical influences and knowledge to the table and Julian had played in and out of many bands for over 10 years, most significantly a 3-year stint with the regional touring act Residew in the early 1990's. The guys continued their trek into outerspace with the addition of Michael Edge on the bass, who himself was a veteran of many bands from the SC music scene who had decided he was ready to take a break from the Charleston, SC music scene and move to Columbia. Michael brought many years of experience including touring and performing all over the South as a solo act and with many different groups. The final piece of the puzzle fell into place when the band needed a new drummer and Julian contacted his college friend and former Residew bandmate Randy Danny, VP to provide the South's most solid backbeat. Randy brought a wealth of experience to the band. After he and Julian parted ways in the early 1990's, Randy went on to play and tour for several years with Allgood Music Co. and eventually settled down in Atlanta, GA where he has played with a variety of acts over the last 10 years, including but not limited to the Fred Reese Band and now with the Danny Family. He also serves as vice-president of Atlanta's Foul Country records when he's not holding down the beat for his many music projects.

In the harsh reality of this modern world, Devils in Disguise are nothing more than a group of weekend warriors who love to spread the gospel of country soul in a modern world of rap, remixes and raves. The boys just can't give it up though. It is part of who they are. Country soul doesnt draw much, but it does leave a stamp on the heart. So take my advice and yall come on out to church sometime. Put your ears and dancin' shoes .. you show up and let the boys do the rest.

- Earl Throttlebottom Dantzler, March 2006

I’ve been a music journalist for more than 10 years. Over the years, many artists and managers have asked me what the best way to break into the European music market is.

Here are some things you can do:

Publish artist press releases, news, and tour dates to the CountryHome Forum on MySpace, http://groups.myspace.com/CountryHomeMagazine , CountryHome Forum is part of CountryHome, http://www.CountryHome.de , Germany's Premier Country Music Online Magazine. Everything you publish to the CountryHome Forum will be published in my weekly Newsletter which has over 80,000 readers.

Publish artist interviews in English to http://groups.myspace.com/CountryHomeMagazineInterviewsEnglish , interviews in French to http://groups.myspace.com/InterviewsAvecCountryMusicStars and interviews in German to http://groups.myspace.com/CountryMusikInterviews . All these groups on MySpace are part of CountryHome, http://www.CountryHome.de , Germany's Premier Country Music Online Magazine.

Send me CDs and DVDs for review and set up an artist interview with me. All reviews and interviews will be submitted to the magazines I'm writing for. More information for which magazines I'm writing can be found at http://www.MySpace.com/ChristianLamitschka

Upload artist videos to http://www.MyVideo.de and http://www.ClipFish.de . Both websites are like http://www.YouTube.com and uploading videos is free. The websites are completely in German. If you don’t speak German and need assistance, I will help you open an account and upload a video for 25 Euro. Each additional video upload for the same artist name and at the same video website is 10 Euro.

If you have more questions about the European music market or about any of the information I send to you today, please contact me at Ch.Lamitschka@t-online.de too.

Today I would like to let you know about two print magazines in Germany I'm writing for.

"Living Line Dance", reporting about line dance and country music, and "Folk Magazine", reporting about folk and country music. The magazines are high respected in Europe. They offer you a good chance to publicize yourself in Europe and Germany.

For more information, please contact me at MySpace or send email to Ch.Lamitschka@t-online.de with the headline "Advertise at Living Line Dance and Folk Magazine".

Warm regards
