Originally known as William and the Smackheads, Devils on Parade was formed in autumn 2005 by the original line-up of:
Gordan McCreath (drums)
Roy Brown (guitar)
Fraser Campbell (guitar)
Sophie Hanlon (bass)
Sam Irvine (vocals)
After a couple of basic recordings of their work (’Homophobia is Gay’, ’Insanity’) and a string of successful gigs in late 2005, they became well known for their heavy yet catchy songwriting and their onstage sense of humour, which included a musical interlude where Gordan would do a ’gay dance’ to the audience.
In the new year, their style changed slightly to encompass a darker sound, more akin to metal, and guitarist Roy Brown came up with several instrumental songs, including the catchy yet technical tendonitis-inducing ’27’. These songs were promptly added to the band’s live setlist and they gradually became more known for their instrumental prowess and twin lead tapping melodies than for their humourous breaks, which now included throwing out small pieces of paper with the word ’GAY!’ in large letters on them.
As William and the Smackheads progressed, tensions arose in the band and Sam Irvine was evicted in early May 2006 after several members threatened to leave. Fraser took on the job of vocalist in Sam’s absence, and it became apparent that not even a 600-signature petition would get Sam back in the band: the Smackheads continued to gig, with a surprise set at the youth centre followed by a fluent and well-rehearsed set at the Fling Battle of the Bands, including 2 new songs, an interlude of Gordan spraying the crowd with ’gay juice’ and an announcement of their name-change to ’Devils on Parade’.
However, Sophie, the band’s bassist, left after the Fling gig, saying that her heart simply wasn’t with it any more. The band considered holding auditions for a new bassist, but have ended up cancelling in favour of Ally Gardner being accepted into the band.

Sorry the vocal levels were a bit dodgy, but I think the sound quality was alright over all
[I'm not sure which of you I'm talking to, but] I think you should get your bassist to play more, there's too many bits where theres no bass and it sounds a tad empty
Though I must say, some of those guitar solos were very impressive!

You were good on friday by the way, bit WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH SCARY METAAAAAAAAAAL for my tastes, but impressive all the same! That Trivium song sounded just like the actual thing, although i can't listen to it without thinking the chorus says "BOAT! RUDDER! STRANGE MOUNTAIN!"
