AMERICA'S MOST AUTHENTIC SOUNDING JUG BAND
An old recording from the 1920's of a southern Jug Band!
Fiddler / Jug blower Morgan Croninlin from Skiffle Symphony says Pete sounds just like Jab Jones, the Jug blower in the Memphis Jug Band
-The band sounds Most like the Memphis Jug Band-but we are by no means a re-creation band!
Devine's Jug Band was conceived and pieced together one night in 2007 by drummer Pete Devine (a current member of Gaucho,The Kally Price Blues Combo, Mal Sharpe's Jazz Band{20 years}; And founding member of Bo Grumpus{15years} & also Of Lavay Smith's Red Hot Skillet Lickers) ,and Banjo-mando player Bill Foss(Axelrod,Foss & Cary, the Knuckle Knockers) Other members of the jug band include the very talented Meredith Axelrod(Axelrod&Ventresco)on guitar, kazoo, & vocals, the one and only Mayumi Urhino (Five Dollar Suite)on Fiddle;and either Bill Foss or Jacob Groopman on Banjo-mandolins- and both are great talents!
Devines Jug Band has performed at the 2007 SF jug Band Festival, and again in 2008,with vocalist Dan Hicks, playing a "All Star Band"set with the members of DJB...Performed at the 2007 & the 2008 S.F Blue Grass & Old Time Music Festival,2008 Sacramento Jazz Festival; also at The Great American Music Hall and as well at Jazz at Pearls, the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley...and the Auditorium at the S.F Public Library, just to name a few venues ...Devine's Jug Band has also done numerous radio shows in the Bay Area, including a feature on NPR's "West Coast Live" with host Sedge Thompson-to a national listening audience, and also a TV spot for the NBC News....
Recently, famed jug band leader Jim Kweskin chose one of DJB's recorded songs-What Makes my Baby Cry-to be on a nationally distributed jug band compilation CD titled"Jugs Across America",on the "Whiskey for Breakfast" record label.
DJB truly captures the sound and spirit of the great jug bands from the 20&30's. Based in San Francisco,Ca, this very authentic, yet fresh & unique sounding band pulls it song's repetiore from bands such as "The Memphis Jug Band", "the Mississippi Sheiks", "Gus Cannons jug Stompers", "The Five Harmoniacs" and "the East Texas Serenaders"

"Ticklin' The Strings" by Sweet Hollywaiians
Amazing Japanese hot string band playing 1920's, 30's, 40's style hawaiian, swing, calypso, blues, italian music and originals, featuring vintage instruments.3 songs with Robert Armstrong and Tony Marcus(from Robert Crumb and His Cheap Suit Serenaders)
"The Sweet Hollywaiians have probably the best feel for this 20's music of any string band working today. They manage the rare feat of sounding relaxed even when their playing is hot, are top notch musicians with tasteful arrangements and a full, rich, warm sound.Plus, they have a nice gamut of tunes, from King Nawahi to Giovanni Vicari to Bobby Leecan. See them live, if you can, for an unforgettable experience. If you can't, buy their Cds!" ~ Terry Zwigoff
Hey guys thanks for befriending us! We're currently working on some new songs for this christmas season...in the meantime stop by and check out "Christmas Is Better In The Wintertime" Peace.
Vance & Main is a common intrersection occuring in songs about memphis. I do a different one. That Frisco sound get's better all the time -'m goin' to move there and become a Cisco, whatever that means. Thanks for having me on fiddle that one time. I was damn nervous from the company. It's really good to see y'all sounding so tight and loose at the same time, as a band, which is, you know, ideal... Hope all's well on the more personal front as well. Bestest,
