The Digital Forks are from St. Petersburg and represent a section of modern Russian music that - aware of its meager skills in an increasingly technical medium - straddles the spontaneously live and the studiously digital. It does so deliberately, in order to make some interesting observations about skill and social ability per se.
Formed in 2006, DF have dabbled with hi- and low-fi extremes (being comfortable in neither!) in order to force the interface of what they call “pseudo analog.” Unbridgeable distances emerge between the real and the virtual, between the actual and the potential.
Investigating a childish self-determination amidst social and/or technical forces increasingly beyond their control, they’ve then coined another, even more specific term for this outlook and the way it sounds: “Toy Electronics.”
This is the sandbox of elektronika, the construction of its simplest, most ingenuous patterns. The music of ’Digital Forks’ should appear if an old radio receiver, air conditioner, and a Tetris game box had organized their own band. Rusty, almost prehistoric junk and hi-tech complexity consider one another.
The analog, cruder, and more messily confident aspects of “DF” are evident live. The larger, lumpen forms of the world are handled with bold and noisy flair…
…whereas the modest radio receivers, AC units, and Tetris sets - now capable of so little - are used as metaphors of limit or a humbling boundary in studio work.
