"Zazen isn't about blissing out or going into an alpha brain-wave trance. It's about facing who and what you really are, in every single goddamn moment. And you aren't bliss, I'll tell you that right now. You're a mess. We all are. But here's the thing: that mess is itself enlightenment".

"This is another way Buddhism differs from religion. Every religion in the world starts off from the premise that the self is a substantial entity and builds from there. They all start off on a foundation that isen't just wobbly, it's entirely absent! It's like trying to build a house by stacking bricks in the sky". ~ Quotes from Hardcore Zen by Brad Warner.

   DHARMA BROTHER's Blurbs
About me:
Born in 1950 year of the Iron Tiger in the country on a small farm in north central Ohio where I was raised Catholic.
As a child I played in the creeks and climbed the trees, chased butterflies through the fields, caught lighting bugs on warm summer nights and counted the stars. This gave me my love of nature as well as camping, hiking and swimming in the Mohican State Park most of my life. I love song birds and have fed and studied hummingbirds since 1985.
Thought of becoming a Catholic priest in grade school and again in my mid thirties. There was always a spiritual awareness as well as a connection to the earth from a very young age.
I left the Catholic church in my mid teens and wandered during the late 196o's and 70's. In my twenties I worked at a local head shop selling water beds and bongs. I tried to be politically aware and was very angry about the Vietnam war, unfair drug laws and the killings of the four students at Kent State University just a few miles from here. In my spare time I studied Native American religions and Eastern Philosophy including Taoism and Buddhism and more recently became an ordained Lay Zen Buddhist in 2006. My Dharma name is,"Doryu", Japanese for "Dragon Way". I also participated in Lakota Sioux sweat-lodge and pipe ceremonies for a few years (1990's) with my friends Beverly and Brenda. And was active in the local peace group, Citizens For Peace & Justice protesting the gulf war.
I was married for three years back in the 80's. I miss having a special woman in my life. I became Catholic again at this time and was interested in the Catholic Worker Movement and inspired by people like Dorthy Day, Thomas Merton, Daniel Berrigan, Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.. I also was working on becoming a Third Order Franciscan. A religious order for lay people in the tradition of St. Francis of Assisi. I left the Catholic church again after my divorce in 1989.
I worked in two major factories here that are now gone and been a part of two national labor unions. I never liked factory work and am glad that part of my life is over but I always liked what the unions stood for.
The town I grew up in is where they shot the movie "The Shaw-shank Redemption". The band Godsmack made their music video "Awake" in the same location (The Old Mansfield Reformatory). The old prison was also on an episode of Ghost Hunters on the Scifi Channel.
In 1991 I retired due to my health and lead a peaceful life now running a local zendo.
I like Japanese culture and hope to go to Japan some day. I love the Japanese tea ceremony and have my own tea bowel and tea instrument's and have seen the ceremony done once in person at Cloud/Water Zendo in Cleveland. I like haiku poetry, bonsai plants, katanas and tantos (samurai swords) and Zen gardens.
I love music and all types of instruments like guitar, sitar, flute and especially hand drums. I played in one garage band as a singer and later in another as a percussionist. I also carried band equipment and played on stage twice when I was young. I'm also a movie buff and like to collect movies. They are the great American art form.
I also collected underground comics in the early 70's of artists like Robert Crumb, Dave Sheridan, Greg Irons and Wes Wilson. Until recently I wrote the newsletter for the local Zen group until they went else where and I still maintain the web site (below). I hope some day to have my own building with a permanent Zendo in it for MZC and a good group of practicing Zen Buddhists to share it with.

"We are all parts of a universal web of being  that stretches across all universal dimensions. All matter of energy are interrelated to all sentient beings; are grasped in the infinite, compassionate embrace of Amida. Thus, all beings influence and are influenced by you and are composed of the same substance that composes you. All living things have genetic and molecular material in common. How can you not see all others as, at the very least, your cousin, if not your own parent or child?"

Speak or act with a pure mind
And happiness will follow you
As your shadow, unshakable.

In this world
Hate never yet dispelled hate.
Only love dispels hate.
This is the law,
Ancient and inexhaustible.

Knowing this, how can you quarrel?

Namaste!
Johann

Hey there,

Here's one from left field...

Ever wondered what to do in the event of a nuclear threat?

A while ago I found stuff that inspired me to make this film:

Living Under the Shadow of the Nuclear Umbrella

Both artistic (ensure you get the background music!) and educational, it primarily comprises official British government civil defence advice.

Though source materials are quite aged, much remains relevant today.

I encourage all to visit the YouTube page to learn more (Show support! Rate! Comment!) and responsibly circulate as widely as possible, here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaIim3Rj7L4

Help to raise awareness.

Say have you checked out my web site recently?

Take care and keep in touch.

Best,
Faber.

Love is a rose
But you better not pick it.

It only grows when it’s on the vine.

Handful of thorns
And you’ll know you missed it.

You lose your love
When you say the word “mine.
