Dharma Son Collective 2005-2008
Our music has been tagged with many descriptions, among them are “Video-game music”, “Noise”, “Sound-effects”, “Incoherent”, “Non-conveying”, “Indescribable”, “Nonsense”, “Graveyard music”, etc.etc...
Well, it can be whatever you want it to be. Take it or leave it. One thing we have never been told by reviewers or listeners alike is that we lack originality. Yes, we have been stereotyped by many, but we trust that it’s only natural human reaction to be negative towards new or misunderstood sounds. We have our influences, as all artists do. We’re not too proud to admit that.
Our non-musical influences include, but are not limited to: God, Jesus, Jack Kerouac, Edgar Allan Poe, Satan, Franz Kafka (he boogies at sunset), Gregory Corso, Kenneth Patchen, Arthur Rimbaud, James Douglas Morrison (the writer), Charles Baudelaire, Antonin Artaud, the Theater of Cruelty, the 50’s Beat movement, Sylvia Plath, Danny the Tourettes Guy (RIP), cracked mirrors, candles, Hunter S. Thompson, Gonzo Journalism, freethought, cemeteries, sunsets, sunrises, adipocere, flowers, swingsets, umbrellas, Autumn, midnight, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, mental illness, coffee, tea, Hieronymus Bosch, Salvador Dali, M.C. Escher, Monty Python’s Flying Circus, cannabis, silhouettes, bicycles, hallucinations, delirium, deranging of the senses through sound, etc.etc..
oh, and Bob Fardno. (the Apartment 8 land lord) He’s the coolest, ‘cause he’s the Fard. FARDNO!!
But anyway, enough of this gay banter. Let’s get down to brass tacks here.
We came together in 2005, with the original founding line-up of Jim, Jess and John Panebianco, as well as comrade Lenny Sylvester. Since our beginnings, we have had many faces drift in and out of our collective, some of which include: Quinn Charlesworth, Garrett Busato, ‘Bob’ Swanson, Cheryl Garofalo, Arthur Garofalo, Justin Panebianco, Chad Wright, and boo. We have recorded under many varying line-ups, but the creative brainchildren of DSC are brothers Jim and John. From our humble beginnings, we have followed our own visions and intuitions, never willing to sacrifice originality for public acceptance. We may not ‘make any sense’ or ‘convey to the people uuhh’, but neither did the Velvet Underground in 1967! Use your own judgment.
D.S.C. as of February of 2008 has been officially disbanded.
Although we shall continue our musical quest furthermore...
To all our supporters (April, you’re 1), thank you!
this is Dharma Son Collective's final project, along with the album 'Harlottan', they both stand as bookend albums and the epitaph of D.S.C.
Arckangelus 2007-
Arckangelus is a free-associative sound artist who had recorded a double-disc album under Apartment 8. Records with Dharma Son Collective in June, titled 'Veterans'. Each disc over an hour in length, Arckangelus, with DSC, had recorded the album over the course of 24 hours.
Weird, demented, variant and comedic, this album contains everything from off-the-cuff free-jazz, tripped out sound-collages, spontaneous spoken word such as the track 'Mouthjazz-Freesound', to raw acoustic blues with an unconventional slant in lyricism like 'Hobo Man'.
Electric Coffee 2008-2008
Started in March of 2008, Electric Coffee, consisting mostly of two founding members of Dharma Son Collective, along with a small handful of drifting participants, began work on the album 'Metaphysical Symphony', which has been finished since July of '08.
Anomalyensemble 2008-
The newest amalgamation of the Apartment 8 entourage,
Anomalyensemble already has 6 finished albums,
as 3 more are currently in the works..
Founded under the name within Apartment 8 Record's formerly new location,
(Athens, Georgia) Anomalyensemble has begun taking a variety of new directions, as we always have under any other album or moniker..
Greetings. Took me a while to find you guys again. Changed the name, huh? Anyways, I'm lovin' the new music, Johnny! No lie. Not that it's a shock of course. Our styles and influences are quite similar at the bottom of it all. Actually, the direction I'm moving towards is more experimental and psychedelic as of late, like this material; it seems like my taste is more similar and parallel to you than my own brother these days. Sad how him and I have drifted musically and personally. I don't know where his mind is these days. Haven't talked to him in a bit.
So, "Do you remember (who your family was)" is by far my favorite track of yours now. Truly original and far-out. It's exactly where my mind is focused right now. This song is inspiring me. It was never boring and each new sound that tickled my ear was salacious and exquisite to hear. I love that one particular sound ... I think it's flanger on guitar or something. Great effect. You know, the one that moves from left to right and back and forth. I think I want to write one similar to this regarding my brother's paranoia and delusions. If you could put the lyrics up, that would be swell.
Second favorite is "Grab the smoke." I like the melody on this one.
Still love "Cleopatra's Needle" and is probably my third favorite.
Fourth? Without a doubt "Isolations." Is that Lizabeth doing the female background vocal? If so, I like it! Nice touch. I've always longed to have a female sing in the back of my vocals.
All the others are great too. If I had to pick the least favorite, and I hope you don't mind me saying (I'm sure you can respect my opinion, my honest and healthy criticism) ... the weakest song, might be "Regardless"... not sure why this one sounds a bit off to me, but something is missing here. But it doesn't matter what I think. Farewell. -Jared
Listen to the first recording of this LSD/HASHISH/FIXY/JOINTY sound. Take a trip to your inner light. See the hallucinations of reality rise out of the groove. You've got your BRAINTICKET now!. Only listen once a day to this record. Your brain might be destroyed!
My name is Shereen [sure.een]. I assume that would be implied by the display name, but you never know. Haha awesome. So you'd prefer for me to listen through head phones?
