Bio:
.. Amazing virtuosi of the tasha (snare drum), bass drum more powerfull than the hardest drum”n’bass that’s the Dhols of Jaipur. The incredible experience of the indian transe percussions.Every year , during ten days, streets of Jaipur, Rajasthan capital, will resonate with drums celebrating Imam Hussain's martyrdom, as it has been a tradition since the city foundation by the hindu maharaja Jai Singh. Thousands of people crowd together for the Festival and stroll along the wide boulevards of the Pink City, accompanied by groups from 5 to 40 drummers in processions toward splendid finely decorated temples made of wood and papier maché, several metres high.
Every district gets its own orchestra enhanced with dhols (a big bass drum covered with animal hides beated by bass drumsticks) and tashas (higher sound drum, a kind of snare drum). Then the music they play differs totaly from the common folklore and its staggering rythms are a real invitation to dance and trance.
Directed by Ishak Ali Kawa, the musicians of the Dhols of Jaipur come from a unique Rajasthan family and have played the same music over seven generations.
Some rythms come directly from the sufi music, as sawari that is used in qawwali or the Abida Parveen’s kafi. Another rythm, as gumar, comes from the rajasthani sufi tradition and is a creation of the Dhols of Jaipur family, played only by this family.
Based on the classical hindoustani music (all the members are classical musicians), the tashas improvisations are a transposition of the tablas kayda to the sticks and drum. The tashas crack, when the dhols roll like a thunder. A Dhols of Jaipur concert is a physical experience as a musical and rythmical experience.
