Happy New Year 2009!

I am the author-illustrator of a new comic book for diabetics and the people who live, love, and care for them: which is to say, everyone. As a diabetic, I haven’t always been a great patient. And I’ve had the opportunity to experience many more complications than perhaps an obedient diabetic might. Diagnosed as a Type 1 diabetic at the age of 2, close to 36 years now, I have a lot to say.

Due to start-up costs, I’ve divided my collection of cartoons into three or more volumes of about 90 pages each. The cartoons that form One Lump Or Two: Things That Suck About Being Diabetic (Volume 1) span a period of more than a decade, starting as nothing more than a few doodles and growing to represent a life time of personal struggles and experiences. It’s not a comic book for children, I might add; it presents real-life situations and language.

I’ve had excellent feedback from diabetic educators and doctors; commiseration and laughter from my fellow diabetics and their families. The book is an excellent educational tool, not limited to the diabetic, but including those around them who are still trying to understand the disease. (As if that’s possible. Ha!) I’ve traded-in denial as my favorite coping mechanism and chosen humor; it seems to be much more productive.

I hope this email has sparked some curiosity and you’ll contact me for a sample of my work or to order a book for review. I’m confident that there’s an enormous audience for these comics and I’m determined to reach as much of it as I can. Whoo-hoo.

Most, most sincerely,

“Haidee Merritt has produced an insightful, hilarious take on having diabetes based on real-life experience. Her book, One Lump or Two- Things That Suck About Diabetes is an perceptive and inspired comic book which could have been a collaboration between George Carlin, Linda Barry and Harvey Pekor.
