Sounds Like
A strange man walks off a train, sets down his suitcase, dusts off his hat and pulls out a guitar from a worn case. His partner begins plucking four thick cables and a steady two beat begins; the man strums his beaten guitar, but seems distant, unsatisfied until he starts kicking his suitcase, and the small crowd soon realize that it is in time with the two step. Some think-- what a waste of a decent suitcase, which by the way are quite hard to find these days, others seem captivated if not by the music but by the the duo, at their apparent lack of concern for making their next train connection....or any connection to anything that makes sense.....but the music goes on...
Diablo's Dust is the damned-spicy and devilishly eclectic Indie Rock duo made up of Thom and Sarah Kilts. Some folks are calling their Celtic-influenced sound "Punk-Grass" these days, others "Eclectic Twang." iTunes doesn't know what to make of the percussively driven duo, so they've labeled them "Pop" and "Rock." Diablo's Dust has been likened to Wilco, The Pogues, The White Stripes and Flogging Molly.
In live performances, Thom takes turns playing various guitars and banjo, all the while keeping time with one foot kicking a bass drum and the other pedal-kicking a block and tambourine (yes, one man can do all that at once -- and it makes for a finger-pickin, foot-stompin' good time!) Sarah plays bass, and both lend their powerful vocals to an impressive repertoire of high-test original music.
"All that's left for [Thom Kilts] to do now is to rock on his chair a little to get it to squeak to the rhythm...Thanks to multi-instrumentalism and strong song writing, Devil's Dust avoids the problem that traps a lot of duos: namely sounding the same song after song." ~ Jose Segue, Hicks With Sticks (8/21/07)
In February, 2008 Diablo's Dust released their album, "Somewhere Between the Beginning and the End" straight from their garage studio. Both that album and their previous one "Living In Nowhere"(2007) have been made available for wide release; they can be purchased from CD Baby, iTunes and many other digital services (see links below). In September 2008, the band released their newest 20 song offering, "When Time Stops." It too is available on wide release (link below). Their fourth album, "Lullabies for Bedlam," is scheduled to be released late fall 2009!
Currently Diablo's Dust plays exclusively in the San Francisco Bay Area, alternating their gigs between clubs and pubs.
Look for the vintage blue suitcase at their next show and be sure to pick up something a little different from the same 'ol same ol'.
