My name is pronounced “dee-YAH-nah”, like a spiced-up version of Indiana Jones, but not quite. My mother, Nilda Toro, moved to Memphis from Puerto Rico in 1978, just three years before I was born in this lovely section of the Bible Belt known as Memphis, Tennessee. Home of the King. And I. Entonces, en Español, me llamo Diana y mi mamita bonita es de Puerto Rico, el bellisimo viejo San Juan. Es donde el mar encuentra la alma. The above means: Well, in Spanish, my name is Diana and my adorable Mami is from Puerto Rico, the very beautiful Old San Juan. It’s where the sea meets the soul. My Hispanic family and our culture have given me a very strong sense of pride in my family: in who I am, and who I am becoming. I am an International Business major with a probable minor in Economics, all set to graduate this August. I am currently taking a full eighteen hours in addition to being a very busy mother to my 15-month-old toddler, Elek (pronounced Ehl-eck, like Alec with an E). It just dawned on my that the constant pronunciation hang-ups that my mother bestowed upon me, I have now given to my child! It will be good for his social skills. I love to travel and enjoy being a foreigner more than a native any given day. I love experiencing life with an open mind and learning new languages. I was lucky enough to stay in Rome for a month a few years ago. I became almost fluent in Italian while I was there. I am a hard worker, a great multitasker, a cunning linguist, a meticulous editor, an even better writer, a bilingual translator, and a striking individual. I hope to travel with my profession doing contract work in Western Europe, South America, and Africa. I have learned that perspective is everything, and when you stop learning, you stop living. I never take a first impression for granted. I am defined by my self-respect, smile, and sharp wit. I am a natural communicator, to the point of giving friends and family unsolicited advice, which I am tirelessly attempting to stop. It seems to be a Latin thing. I am so proud of being a devoted mother. Before I had my son, I never cried or opened up to many people, but Elek has broadened my spectrum of emotions immensely. We are constantly learning from one another and he is already speaking in Spanish and English, over twenty (mostly intelligible) words! I am an artist and won First Place in the Arts in the Park Banner Competition in 1998. I only enjoy art as a hobby, as soon as it becomes a commitment, I lose inspiration. I have about twelve of my original works in my townhouse. I am actually proud of myself for getting married. I have been independent to the point of never “needing” anyone, and now I realize that it is okay to let someone in once you know you will be better for it in the long run. I happen to be incredibly lucky that the father of my son is also the most amazing person and friend I have ever met. I would not recommend it for everyone, but having a child and growing as a person and a parent is so informative and a great precedent to marrying that person!
