"Diane McKoy and A SMALL FEW" featuring
STEVEN ANTONELLI - DANIEL MARCUS - DIANE MCKOY
Beautiful Acoustic Country Gospel Music with Old-Time and Bluegrass fervor
Press release by S. Robson
NEW YORK CITY....Gospel has been the bedrock of Diane McKoy's musical journey. Diane has covered Bluegrass, Blues, Rock, Country, Choral, & R&B as a singer & writer. McKoy recorded as an artist for Scepter/Hob Records & Columbia/Epic Records.
Founding and fronting a Country band in New York City as an African-American is unusual enough, even more so, a BLUEGRASS band. Diane McKoy has founded New York City's first & only Gospel bluegrass band - the Singing Conquerors which thrived for 13 years. The Singing Conquerors played at the White House & can also be seen performing in the film, "Hills of Old Home"; a Dr. Ralph Stanley Documentary film about his legendary old time music in the Clinch Mountains of Virginia.
Diane defines her journey as, "my own unique creation of melting cultures true to my form". That definition sums up her music & performance: unique & true.
Diane's new beloved band, "Diane McKoy & A Small Few" is the most raved about trio in New York City, a must see act of musical spirituality. Diane has an unteachable gift of blending the right musicians and sounds, as shown in the uplifting mandolin / dobro & guitar in "Diane McKoy and A Small Few", provided by her talented musician friends; Steven Antonelli and Daniel Marcus.
McKoy's Christian faith has kept her grounded and has been the source of her resilience and preserverance.
Origin of "A Small Few"
It started with God's Prophetic Word given in the late 1990's; then displayed some tangibility in 2002 with vocalist Diane McKoy, & singer/guitarist Steven Antonelli who performed concerts for awhile with John Ruis on tenor banjo and mandolin. In late 2003 Steven left, moving his family to beautiful Waterville, Maine where he was fortunate to perform in churches, compose for and direct the Valley View Mandolin Ensemble and play bluegrass with Spring Creek. In 2006, Steven relocated his family back to New York City to become the Director of Bank Street Head Start. Quickly and easily the group came together again.
"A Small Few" embodies in December 2006 with Diane's former colleague, the very talented and cherished Steven Antonelli, plus her new-found cherished colleague Daniel Marcus who is a school music teacher and very gifted multi-instrumentalist. Diane linked her two colleagues together and "A Small Few" becomes a flattering metamorphis manifesting a renaissance & resurrection.
