My new novel, 'Hitler and Mars Bars' begins in wartime Germany. Erich's first home is Goldschmidthaus, a Children's Home near Essen. He lives for visits with his beloved mother and longs for the day he will live with her. He is distraught when, after a heavy bombing raid, her visits abruptly cease.
After the war he finds himself, with hundreds of other German children, transported across Europe to escape the appalling conditions in their homeland. Operation Shamrock brings Erich and his brother, Hans, to a new life in Ireland but with different families.
During the next few years Erich experiences the best and worst of Irish life. Living in a string of foster families, he finds love and acceptance in some and indifference and brutality in others. At Daddy Davy's he finds a loving home and is re-united with his brother. But his brief taste of happiness is dashed by circumstances he cannot control.
This is the story of a German boy growing up alone in Ireland. He dreams of finding his mother. He yearns for a family who will love and keep him forever. He learns his brother is his ally not his rival. Plucky and resilient he surmounts the challenges his ever changing world presents.
Set in Germany's industrialised Ruhr Valley during the Second World War and post-war rural Ireland this book evokes a little known episode in German and Irish history. It is a moving tale of a German child caught in war's vicelike grip and flung into a new land to grow and forge a new life.

Hakkımda:
Curiosity about the past has inspired my lifelong interest in history and my family tree, as well as my love of historical fiction novels. I recently released my first novel, 'Hitler and Mars Bars'. It's the story of a German boy's journey to manhood in war-torn Germany and post-war rural Ireland. See www.geocities.com/dianne_ascroft for more info about it.
I've written a variety of articles about people and events of bygone days. But I'm also intrigued by contemporary people with interesting stories to tell and I've written arts/music profiles and interviews as well as other human interest stories for Canadian and Irish newspapers and magazines including the Toronto Star, Mississauga News, Derry Journal, Banbridge Leader and Ireland's Own Magazine.
I live on a small farm in Northern Ireland with my husband and an interesting collection of pets.

Kimle tanışmak isterim:
Writers and musicians top my list of people I'd like to meet - creativity facinates and inspires me. Since I started writing I've had a chance to meet and interview several of my teenage favourites including Les McKeown, the Bay City Rollers lead singer, and also Ian Mitchell and Damien McKee, members of Rosetta Stone. There are so many writers I'd like to meet. Off the top of my head I'd say - Maeve Binchy, Jodi Picoult, Alice Taylor and Diana Gabaldon. All of them present very human characters and I'd love to hear how they make their characters come alive. Closer to home, I'd like to chat with Brian D'Arcy, BBC Broadcaster, Sunday World Columnist, author and journalist - he wrote a wonderful review of my book, 'Hitler and Mars Bars' and, after reading his memoirs, I'd love the chance to chat with him about many thoughts it's stirred in my mind.
