The year 2004 was a Jubilee Year, and that meant that millions of people have made the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Composer/musician Dick le Mair has written the experience of making his own personal journey to Compostela to music. The CD characterized as "light classical" is rare because it is the only work written with the pigrimage to Santiago de Compostela as its theme.
In addition to the complete works on CD released on September 6 2003, there is also a compilation version available. This special edition is included as bonus material with the purchase of a book about the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.
This book is a re-release of the book "The Pilgrimage" written by world famous author Paulo Coelho. This author has been very successful in the literary world: more than 50 million of his books have sold worldwide. The combination of the book and the CD was released in September 2004 by the Arbeiderspress.
Born in The Hague (The Netherlands), Dick le Mair grew up in a family where music played an important role. His father was church organist and Dick sat next to him high up in the back of the church listening while his father played the Sunday liturgy. The piano was a dear object in the Le Mair home, and Dick learned to play classics from Bach to Mozart as a hobby but then Dick discovered rock and roll music! No more piano, no more classics, Dick began playing drums for local rock bands, took lessons from jazz drummers and orchestral percussionists and ended up studying percussion and composition at the conservatory in Rotterdam.
During his study Dick specialized in the music of modern composers and very quickly was travelling to concert halls and universities all over the world. He toured throughout Europe, South America, Canada and Australia, was a guest teacher at the University of Sydney (Australia) and Caracas (Venezuela) and did several concerts and recordings for radio in Canada and Europe.
More recently Dick has been active as a composer / arranger and producer. He has written documentary music for German television wrote jingles and orchestral works for Dutch television and produced and arranged orchestral recordings for the record companies EMI, CNR and SONY. "...making beautiful music in anonimity", explains Dick.
In 1998 his first solo cd was recorded. EMI released the album "Over the Ages", a combination of Keltic, classical and Gregorian influences. His second cd project, also released by EMI is titled "Impressions of a Pilgrimage". It is a symphonic work in 15 parts with symphonic orchestra, choir, vocal and instrumental soloists, organ and an elaborate array of percussion instruments. This music is the story, the impression of Dicks travels along the pelgrims route Santiago de Compostela where all of Dick's influences and past experiences come together with his impressions of the route itself. This musical journey ends at the cathedral of Santiago, where Dick ends high up in the back of the church, seated at the bench of the imposing 18th century organ for the recording of the finale of his "Impressions of a Pilgrimage".
