Babes in Toyland......Calamity Jane......L7......none of these fine female bands hold a candle to the sheer LovePowerFuzzStomp of DICKLESS. Formed in 1989, they were part of the first-guard of Seattle/Sub Pop heavies and in their all-too-brief existence released some of the heaviest 7" singles of the late '80's, early '90's. The early line up featured the pummeling rhythm section of JANA MCCALL on Bass and LISA SMITH on Drums. Vocalist KELLY CANARY couldn't have been more than 5' tall, but if you can can imagine Lemmy's vocal chords being roughed with 80-grit sandpaper, that was her amazing vocal style. KERRY GREEN's bludgeoning power-chords tied it all together to create the thickest, fuzziest rock n' roll this side of SuperFuzzBigMuff. The band released (in my humble opinion) a double A-sided 7" 'I'm a Man' b/w 'Saddle Tramp' on Sub Pop in 1990 with the UK 12" adding the excellent cut 'Miniskirt Mob'. They were also represented on the C/Z records' series TERIYAKI ASTHMA vol. 3 7" with their uh....cover 'Sweet Teeth'. Jana McCall left the band and was replaced by JENNIE TROWER on Bass for the 2nd line-up, and is represented on the cut 'C-Word', which later appeared on the UP RECORDS compilation 'UP NEXT'. A proposed 7" release of 'C-Word' b/w 'Hey Lumberjack' through Sub Pop never saw the light of day. Due to rumoured vocal chord troubles Kelly Canary left the band to be replaced by a whole slew of guest vocalists for the 'Dickless All-Stars' 7". Never released to the public at large, this highly coveted, four song record was given away to guests at a Sub Pop shindig, and is now considered one of the most highly collectible of all Sub Pop 7"s. Sub Pop staffer MEAGAN JASPER eventually took over on vocals, although the recorded output from this line-up is vaulted until a loving release is executed. Quite a history for a band that existed for little more than a year. A MUCH-ANTICIPATED Dickless Anthology was passed on by Sub Pop and Up Records, and according to E-mails I've received has been put on hold indefinitely, so for now, enjoy these fine selections of one of the most heavy, enigmatic, and under-documented bands in rock n' roll history. Thank you to Mr. 'Godhead' Jack Endino for all of his awesome recordings.
LISA SMITH continued on in all her Bonzo-esque glory with releases by bands ATOMIC 61, BIG SATAN INC, SLAPPYWHITE, and TEEN ANGELS (who along with KELLY CANARY on vocals and guitar released the 'Teen Dream' single and 'Daddy' Lp for Sub Pop as well as the 'Jesus is on My Side' and 'The Early Years' singles for Scooch Pooch Records) and is currently forming a new band in SoCal.
KELLY CANARY is reported to be studying law at an as of yet undisclosed university and still resides in Seattle.
KERRY GREEN works as curator in her father's Glenn Green Galleries in Tesuque, New Mexico.
JENNIE TROWER is and always has been a photographer, and is currently living in Austin, Texas.
MEAGAN JASPER is still an integral worker for the Sub Pop empire in Seattle, having been through its original heyday, on through the label's current monolithic incarnation.
JANA MCCALL relocated to Bozeman, Montana, and has released two solo records, one self-titled and another called 'Slumber', in a dark, folk vein for UP RECORDS.

II. HIGH PRIESTESS. 0274. bb (pictured: a. orchid)
Continuing his journey, the Fool comes upon a beautiful and mysterious veiled lady enthroned between two pillars and illuminated by the moon. She is the opposite of the Magician, quiet where he was loquacious, still where he was in motion, sitting while he stood, shrouded in the night where he was out in the bright of day. She is the High Priestess and she astonishes the Fool by knowing everything about him.
