Tibet's stolen child is Gedhun Choekyi Nyima the boy recognized by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as one of Tibet's most important religious leaders. He is known as the Panchen Lama and is one of the young victims of China's brutal repression of the Tibetan people.Determined to control religion in Tibet, the Chinese authorities kidnapped this young boy and his family in 1995 just days after he was recognized as the Panchen Lama. He is growing up under house arrest.Despite repeated appeals to gain access to him, no international agency or human rights organization has been granted contact with the young Panchen Lama or His family. But the story is not over. Suspicions that he had been kidnapped were confirmed in 1996, when the Chinese government admitted to holding the boy and his family in "protective custody." After repeated attempts to locate and visit the boy, not one international agency or human rights organization has been allowed to meet with the Panchen Lama or his family, and their condition remains uncertain. Furthermore, in an attempt to establish their pre-eminence in all "internal affairs" of China, political or otherwise, the atheistic Chinese government nominated and selected their own 11th Panchen Lama in November 1995. Their selection, a six year-old boy named Gyaltsen Norbu,is another young victim in China's plan to undermine and control the Tibetan people, their religion, and their nation.
The Tibetan National Flag And HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
During the reign of the seventh-century king, Songtsen Gampo, Tibet was one of the mightiest empires in Central Asia. Tibet, then, had an army of 2,860,000 men. Each regiment of the army had its own banner. The banner of Ya-ru To regiment had a pair of snow lions facing each other, that of Ya-ru Ma a snow lion standing upright, springing upwards towards the sky, and that of U-ru To a white flame against a red background. This tradition continued until the Thirteenth Dalai Lama designed a new banner and issued a proclamation for its adoption by all the military establishments. This banner became the present Tibetan national flag.

Who I'd like to meet:
10 Quick Facts About Tibet
1. The country of Tibet was invaded by China in 1949/50. Since that time, over 1.2 million Tibetans have died as a direct result of the occupation, over 6,000 monasteries have been destroyed, and thousands of Tibetans have been imprisoned and tortured for their political or religious beliefs.
2. The Dalai Lama, Tibet’s political and spiritual leader, was forced to flee Tibet in 1959. He escaped to India along with over 120,000 other Tibetans, and established the Tibetan Government in Exile in Dharamsala. In 1989, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his steadfast dedication to nonviolence.
3. Tibet was independent. Tibet had a sovereign government, currency, postal system, language, laws, and customs. Prior to 1950, the Tibetan government signed treaties with foreign nations including Britain, Mongolia, and Nepal. While the Chinese government claims that Tibet has “always” been part of China, its invasion of Tibet resembles the same imperialist aggression that China accuses other powers of exhibiting.
4. The “Tibet Autonomous Region” (TAR) is not Tibet, nor is it autonomous. The Chinese government has divided historical Tibet into one “region” and several “prefectures” and “counties. “ The TAR encompasses only the central area and some of the eastern regions of Tibet. Well over half of Tibet’s original territory has been absorbed into Chinese provinces. “Autonomous” is a euphemism for direct control by Beijing.
5. In Tibet today, the basic freedoms of speech, religion, and assembly are strictly limited, and arbitrary arrests continue. According to human rights groups, there are currently hundreds of political prisoners in Tibet, including the young Panchen Lama, imprisoned since age six. Torture of political prisoners is commonplace.
6. The Chinese government’s policies of cultural assimilation and population transfer of ethnic Chinese into Tibet threaten the very survival of the Tibetan identity. Chinese colonists outnumber Tibetans in most urban areas and many rural areas, making Tibetans a minority in their own nation. Meanwhile, thousands of Tibetans continue to flee from Tibet every year, making the treacherous journey over the Himalayas and into the uncertain world of exile.
7. Historical Tibet was a vast country, whose area was roughly equal to Western Europe. Tibet is the source of five of Asia’s largest rivers, which provide the lifeblood for 2 billion people. China has endangered Tibet’s fragile environment through strip-mining, nuclear waste dumping, and extensive deforestation.
8. Although the Chinese government claims to have developed Tibet, most good jobs benefit Chinese colonists, not Tibetans. Tibetans have little or no say in how their country is developed. China has spent millions of dollars building infrastructure in Tibet, but neglected education and healthcare, and many of the roads, buildings, and power plants that have been built directly support heavy militarization of the plateau, allowing China to maintain Tibet as a police state.
9. China is aggressively seeking foreign investment for its “Go West” campaign in Tibet, East Turkestan, and other occupied areas. China is trying to use international funds to develop Tibet as a resource extraction colony and consolidate control over the region. Foreign investment in Chinese companies gives legitimacy to China’s colonization of Tibet, and the exploitative projects they fund do not benefit Tibetans.
10. The world community has done very little to address the core issue of China’s illegal occupation of Tibet. China represents a gigantic market and cheap labor force, and its associated businesses have such a strong lobby that politicians are reluctant to take any substantive measures against the Chinese government. Since western countries adopted policies of so-called “constructive engagement” with China in the 1990s, the human rights situation in Tibet has drastically deteriorated. In order for this to change, world governments must take decisive action to pressure China into respecting human rights and ending its occupation of Tibet.
China And Occupied Territories
The occupied territories are Tibet, East Turkistan, "Inner" Mongolia and Manchuria. Manchuria is shown here at its extent in 1949 when the new Communist government of China was swift to annex it. Only 37 years previously, in 1912, the First President of China, Yan Shi-Kai referred to Manchuria as a territory separate from China. Similarly Tibet was to suffer invasion in 1949-50 when the Communist Chinese raised ancient imperial claims to Tibet as justification for their expansionist policies. China also occupies Aksai Chin, in Indian territory and claims "Outer" Mongolia and large portions of India.China(sensuo - strickto) is exposed as being roughly half the size claimed by the Chinese government and further reductions may be possible if territory of other "minorities" were taken into account. There is evidence to suggest that 90% of "minorities" have either disappeared or been dispossessed of their homelands and/or submerged by massive influx of Chinese colonists since 1949.
As the former Soviet Union was considered a land empire, so too is China, but has escaped popular conception as such, largely through ignorance. It seems that it too may be destined for breakup along similar lines as the old Soviet Union. Both Tibet and East Turkistan have long histories of resistance to Chinese domination and strong independence movements. Whilst "Inner" Mongolia has suffered massive Chinese colonisation, many Mongolans advocate the reunion of their country. Manchuria it seems has suffered heaviest from Chinese colonialism and is all but submerged, yes still there are Manchurians who advocate independence.
The disputed Indo-Tibetan border, a sensitive military zone,is the scene of regular friction between India and China and was the subject of war in 1962 when the Chinese invade. Newly independent Mongolia, having lost Russian domination, sits precariously in the face of Chinese claims to it. The virtually constant unrest in Tibet and East Turkistan has brought expressions of solidarity between the peoples of these two suffering nations and expressions of support have been voiced from people in newly independent Kazakhstan. The Chinese Empire is the focus of largest and last of the great independence struggles of the 20th century, which are still little known or understood. The Tibetan National Song (in japanese)
