Diefenbaker are aiming to create a modern acoustic sound that incorporates the aggression of rock but also the delicacy and poise of classical music, without betraying the simplicity and authenticity of folk. As yet, they have opted not to include any form of percussion, electronic or otherwise (except, of course, for their collaboration with MButterfly), so as to preserve a natural spontaneity of rhythm and an almost impressionistic minimalism. Although their earlier songs are mostly short straightforward minor-key tunes, Diefenbaker are gradually developing a more dynamic style, which is likely to include a wider variety of instruments and a greater breadth of changes in ambience.
