Rock legends, band meltdowns, all part of SXSW music fest

The best reason for a person to trek all the way to Austin for the South By Southwest music festival, other than the chance to see and hear a legend like Neil Young, could be found in one moment of insanity at a scarcely-attended show by a band with a semi-insulting name.
When the singer of Die Princess Die snapped four songs into the band’s set, it was like watching a violent crime in progress. Maybe you know it’s wrong, and you know somebody should do something, but you nonetheless stand there transfixed. In this case, the guitarist in question -- of a great band who has absolutely no desire to play anything remotely close to pop music -- let the loud, scratchy, unhinged rock possess him.
He started by taking off his guitar and throwing it at the wall. His band, probably used to such behavior, kept playing. He then picked it up and threw it the other direction across the stage. The band kept playing. Then, after a moment’s contemplation, ran and threw himself into the rhythm section, scattering drums across the stage and flattening both the drummer and bassist, both of whom took a few minutes to get up.

I remember when they taped that FarmClub show. They were supposed to play at the Troubadour either later the same night or the night after. I drove over in the fucking rain to see them, and they'd pulled out, as the bitchy ticket-seller girl informed me. Jason Reece later said about that night, "I committed the sins of the flesh."
Too bad you didn't record that show at the Casbah in 11/01, Ely. I'd love to have tape of that cymbal crashing into my arm. I had a bruise the size of a waffle for weeks afterwards -- same color, just about. Them was the days...
