A dog or dogs are put into the entrance of a badger sett, or fox earth with the intention of pursuing or bolting the "quarry". The dog can be traced using electronic locators. Some "hard" terriers actually fight the "quarry" underground. Once the terrier-man knows the dog's location, he will dig down and then 'dispatch' the quarry. However, badger diggers may take the badger away for baiting.
Which dogs are used?
The dogs used for underground work are generally small dogs that can get through a network of tunnels, called 'tubes'. The breeds used are terrier types - Jack Russell's, Wire Haired Terriers, Lakeland, Bedlington, and Plummer breeds.
Dogs which are put to work underground are called earth dogs. Dogs which hunt above ground are called running dogs.
The wildlife is not the only casualty...
How are the Animals killed?
A significant number of animals are ripped apart underground and only a small number are humanely dispatched. The rest are finished off by a shovel or heavy stick. Sometimes they are thrown to dogs alive.
Many of these are taken home as 'trophies' for the dogs to play with.
Why do people do it?
Some people get a 'rush' from seeing their dog digging out. It gives them the power to decide whether a wild animal lives or dies. Many will take part in digging out competitions at hunt events. Many people who do it call themselves 'pest controllers' or 'terrier men' but it could be the lad up the road, but they all have one thing in common: They enjoy the 'thrill' of control over life or death.

I've become a little concerned about my exposure to the sun and I went hat shopping. I found this one, it comes complete with a cute little bearded dragon and hummingbird to keep me company. I think it will be perfect. :):)
Wishing you a perfect week. :):)

The weather is still beautiful here. There is a gentle breeze drifting off the bay which is making it wonderful for spending time outside. I spent most of today pulling weeds from between the flagstone. The way my back is feeling right now from bending over, I'm glad I don't have to walk on all fours. hehehe
This evening when I close my eyes, I think I'll take a walk through this quaint little village. With all the flowers in bloom I bet the scent is heavenly.
Wishing you a sorta upright remainder of the weekend. :):)

I hope you enjoyed your weekend. :) We had a bit of rain here but, otherwise the weather was sunny and bright. I spent some of it stringing copper wire to a tree limb. LOL My dad is a ham radio operator and when he starts calling me his orangatan I know he wants me to either climb his radio tower or a tree, this weekend it was a tree. hehehe
Wishing you a sunny and bright week. :):)

The weather here is beautiful today. I'm noticing these peacocks are looking for a shady spot to lay. So are my animals at home. It's not quite noon yet but, I'm hoping to finish up some documents and join them under the trees. :):)
Wishing you a beautiful day. :):)

I'm getting ready for a long weekend here in Canada. I was wondering if you would like to take your imagination and join me at the seaside. We are suppose to have nice weather for Sunday and Monday. Finally, it should be safe to plant my vegetable garden. I planted some of the flower beds last weekend and they look so pretty.:):)
The lighthouse beacon is lit, I think a ship may be arriving soon to take us on a magical voyage, we can take the animal too. :):)
I hope you are having a magical weekend. :):)

Never underestimate the enduring power of a Mother's love. I lost my Mom when I was in my teens and my Gramma only last year but, their beautiful spirits, tenderness and loving kindness are with me every day of my life.
I've felt a little like the momma in this picture. I stayed up much too late Saturday night and was only kinda, sorta awake the next afternoon. That's okay, I enjoyed myself but, I've been making up for lost sleep all week.
Wishing you a kinda, sorta wide awake week. :):)
Lots of Luv!!!

I fell asleep tonight after reading a book and hanging a painting. Once I had closed my eyes I had the most wonderful exotic friends come for a visit. I wish they didn't have to return home once I wake up. Maybe I will be lucky and they will come visit me another night. :):)
Wishing you a wild and exotic week. :):)
Lots of Luv!!!
