Sounds Like
klezmer played by kurdish mountain folk; kurdish folk music played by bartok; bartok played by jazz musicians; jazz played by klezmers
The Dignity of Labour began with a special concert for my father and brother, in town for a visit in 2002. Then as now, the idea was to bridge writte charts and free improvisation, to generate strongly tonal ideas without a chordal instrument, and to explore amusing theatrical and vocal possibilities. I have had the great fortune to work with some of the very finest musicians, including (past, present, and near future) Christine Duncan, Glen Hall, Jean Martin, Lina Alemanno, Gordon Allan, Ronda Rindone, Scott Thomson, Parmela Attarilwala, Sundar Viswanathan, Joseph Sorbara, Nick Fraser, Rob Clutton, Felicity Williams, and Peter Lonergan.
Three of the cuts sample a concert on May 22, 2005, at the Distillery Festival in Toronto. Accolade is a feature for the knockout trumpet playing of Lina Alemanno. Rock Island Line and Royal Garden Blues are examples of what I call 'remembered music'; pieces from vanished traditions reexamined from what we can recall, inventing and filling in with our own experience what we cannot. The final piece is a MIDI file of a recent blues, written for some old friends.
Hi, I just wanted to let you know that my new album Afrikan Machinery is out now on Tzadik Records. Check out some of the tracks on my profile! You can buy the CD here, here, or here. It's also available on iTunes.
Best Wishes, Lukas Ligeti
I am almost finished the third book of your biography, Morse Code (beep, beep, beep), and am wondering if you could clear up just a few more things for me?
1. Was it before or after saving the orphans in the fire of 67' that the Bridge in Calcutta was named after you?
2. Did anyone ever find out that it was you ghost writing for Thad Jones for all those years?
Great to hear from you/hear you here. When we get together in cyber-Montreal let's make sure we're all talking trash loudly and simultaneously. See you soon.
this is beautiful music. thank you. your strive for a different sound is well recognized. keep up the beautiful work and hope to see you at either your show or ours!
bro! thanks.. the tunes are old. i should really switch it up. glad u like tho.. we need to play some music again real soon, i'm predicting a deluge of satanist daycare emails that will result in a meeting of the minds again for music, meal and making merry!!
I am glad to hear that the Dignity of Labour is still around and kicking. I was starting to worry that I'd have to become a Dr. or something to get some respect around here!
We have not seen each other in a very long time, too long. we should try to remedy that. i'm in toronto currently, i'd like to have achance to hear your music in uncompressed formats as well as conversation.
