Richard Jones. Boy if ever there was a crowd pleasing dj he’s the man. Since first stepping foot into a lighting jocks block aged sixteen Brighton’s favourite Mr Jones has demanded hands in the air. It’s been a house filled, funky lead party all the way and we have more to come.
From lighting the lights fantastic at the infamous Part 2 in Nottingham Richard has created his own good fortune. Thanx of course to some mighty fine tunes! After the Part 2 resident walked out the dj box one Saturday night Mr Jones filled his shoes and, in doing so, impressed so much he went on to secured that momentarily vacant vacancy. Providing a soundtrack of heady U.S. disco, U.K. high energy and classics, Richard did the business and was one of the reasons why Part 2 became the biggest gay club outside of London.
Soon we were all paying attention as Jones demand it be it via his mix for the second album in the 12 Inches Of Pleasure series for Proto Records or at some well deserved guest spots including playing alongside Tony de Vit at Birmingham’s Nightingale, Heaven, The Embassy Club, Shaftsbury’s On The Avenue and Bolts in both London and Brighton.
After a two year stint for First Leisure in Nottingham and further two years in Switzerland and Norway Richard returned to the U.K. in time for the phenomena that would become house music. And he was soon feeling the new groove at his residency at The Club back in his hometown of Nottingham. Brighton however beckoned and after a two year dj sabbatical when his estate building career took centre stage Richard secured a residency at Brighton’s much loved Beacon Royal Hotel. Sunday nights were becoming the new Saturday nights and it was here he met fellow dj’s and house addicts Craig Woodrow and Dulcie Danger as well as local promoter and Wild Fruit head boy Paul Kemp. It was hands in the air vocal disco and house all the way and soon a certain Sunday Sundae tea dance was happening. Our Monday mornings would never be quite as focussed again.
A residency at Brighton’s newly opened gay superclub Revenge followed plus guest slots at The Zap, Arc, The Honeyclub as well The Escape and the rest as they say is a bassline! A bassline that lead Richard to his top deck position. Currently a resident dj for the infamous Wild Fruit Parties Richard also enjoys a healthy brightonian residency status. Is there a box he’s not sweated in?? Thursday nights find him resident at Charles Street The Club’s Religion (formerly Moosic Asylum) where his party predisposition ensures it’s one of those kinda nights. Just make sure you take Fridays off work! Meanwhile the weekend, when it finally does come, sees him keeping it Kinky Dangerous upstairs at Revenge whilst Saturday’s also see him at Revenge promoting and djing at his own night Nightclub alongside fellow rotating residents Brett Carter, Hollie, Queen Josephine and Rob Richards. And he also continues to enjoy the spotlight at the ever-superb Sunday Sundae where alongside Dulcie Danger and Kate Wildblood he helps create the kind of sunshine vibe clubbers will always queue for. There is nothing sweeter on a Sunday. Full stop.
Add numerous guest slots across the country and big occasion events on the decks including Birmingham Pride, Tease in Guildford, Birmingham’s Wild Fruit, Bournemouth Pride, Gaydar's Big Day Out at Thorpe Park and of course the Wild Fruit Tent at Brighton Pride. Something Richard will never stop loving no matter how many times he plays there. “Every single Pride “ say Jones “be it the rush of adrenalin or throwing up at the back of the dj due box to nerves, it’s just so memorable. Feeling the power of thousands of people looking at you waiting for the next big tune, when that many people go “YEAH” as you bring a great record into the mix. You can’t help but feel it. Feel it straight through your heart.”
And we’re feeling Mr Jones. Cos we know what dancefloors have known for many years. When they said let’s get this party started they had a certain dj in mind. And that dj is Richard Jones.
Richard was nominated brigton male DJ of the year in 2006 & 2007 - Golden Handbag Awards (Brightons Gay Oscars)
