Spawned from the fiendish minds of Nick Chapman, Jaymin Doe and Spencer Zeh, Dim Sum found a niche market for fun loving party people in London's East End at the beginning of 2008. Not happy with the pretension surrounding so many parties in the area, they joined forces to present a monthly event that replicated that house party vibe, full of great tunes, great vibes and a whole lot of getting down. Finding a home in the then newly managed Horse and Groom in Shoreditch, a tarted up boozer with a killer soundsystem, their residency saw growing numbers each month and allowed them to indulge in their favourite music. Breaks, drum and bass, techno, house these boys love it all and did it all hosting DJs and crews from a diverse range of backgrounds and genres.
But it was their Passenger Records Boat Party that cemented their position as true players in the scene. Being the main event for The Body Snatchers album launch, the party also featured breakbeat stalwarts such as Aquasky, Disco of Doom, Ragga Twins, Backdraft and more, earning them Poll Position in iDJ's Top 5 Essential Nights out and selling out over a month in advance. It was a massive achievement for the then fresh crew and the "bling" theme party was one of the events of the year for punters who came from places as far as Paris, Glasgow and Australia. Their maiden voyage was such a success that they were approached by other labels to hold showcases on their behalf throughout 2009.
February saw Dim Sum celebrate their first birthday with a massive two floor event alongside their friends at Bloom. The Loose Cannons and James Harcourt rocked a capacity crowd and face painters, balloons and decorations added the birthday vibe to a very special night. The party even got the attention of the London Lite paper, a publication with a circulation of about two million readers everyday, where they got a glowing review. It was a time to reflect over a brilliant year for the crew who have taken such massive steps in just one short year. February also saw them branch out into their home town of Perth, Australia, with a regular night starting up and maintaining their ties to their homeland.
With a new Sunday residency under the moniker Tailspin, two boat parties, festival appearances and one off special events, 2009 is looking no less hectic and no less incredible for the Dim Sum crew. Keep your eyes peeled for an incredible event coming to a venue near you.
