  • Bio

Howdy, I am an Upright bassist and singer who is based On Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have the incredible musicians I have played with to thank for what I know about the Upright Bass, and music in general. This is a good opportunity to try to thank a few of these amazing artists and bands: Paul Clifford--The Bass Player, Paul Clifford(Pablo-The drummer), Andrew(Andrulius) Cook, The Be Good Tanyas, Harry Manx, Kim Beggs, Corrine West, Steve Dawson, Romi Mayes, Nathan Tinkham, Fishead Stew, Doug Cox, Sam Hurrie, Aaron Cadwaladr, Gary Fjellgaard, Valdy, Ken Whiteley, John Boutte, Salil Bhatt, Ramkumar Mishra, Tracy Myers, Myron Makepeace, Bob Hamilton, Jeremy Walsh, Bob Bossin, Calvin Cairns, The Kerplunks, Melisa Devost, Andreas Kahre, Phil Wipper, Hilary Peach, Tina Jones, The Contraband Swingclub -And so many more! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As well as my own projects listed on the left, I work Freelance. Dinah D's Contraband Swingclub has our first CD out- Most Definitely Live- 6 originals, 6 favorites. Available via snailmail(www.dinahd.com) or online via CDbaby(http://cdbaby.com/cd/ddcs) I have been writing for a full length solo bass/voice album which is in the works. I also have a 5-song EP called"Outer Bass" which has a few tunes featured here on Myspace - I am very lucky to be able to be a musician. And to live in Canada, where musicians support eachother! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On top of serious adult music, I really should mention our children's music band--"The Kerplunks!" We are going to take over the world and show parents what good kids music is like! So check us out at www.myspace.com/thekerplunks. We have an amazing self-titled AWARD-WINNING album available via old-fashioned snailmail(www.thekerplunks.com), or through CDbaby(http://cdbaby.com/cd/kerplunks)! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I also host House Concerts on Gabriola Island. If I like you, or your music, or my roommates like your music you can come play my place. I book 6+ months in advance. • Sounds Like

"A chocolate covered olive", fan at Vancouver Island Music festival,2006 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Dinah D is a West Coast gem, a real rarity, whose presence, style, and sound will all stick in your head from the very first time you hear her. Herein lies part of the recipe for Dinah Ds triple threat jazz style. Dinah is not only a solid upright bass player- thumping out that low register downbeat almost effortlessly- she's also a gifted singer; a seductive contra-alto with a wry sense of humour. Dinah D's skill as a performer is backed up by strong song-writing talent (check out Dawson, a classic in the making) with roots that go deep far back to the days of Viper jazz and a sound that is steeped in the blues. If you get the chance to see Dinah perform, do not hesitate to make the gig!" -James Booker,CHLY Radio Malaspina ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Regarding 'Outer Bass'----"It's wonderfully simple and simply wonderful. Cool phrasing and great turns of phrase. Wistful AND real. Raw in the best of ways as only a first CD can be. And your full sweet voice. OH yeah. I love every moment of Outer Bass with you." -Alan Darling, Paperchoice Recycled Papers , Gabriola BC ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Regarding 'Outer Bass'--------"Lots of things to admire about what you've created. Original songs, some extraordinarily tasty lines..... I'll be listening again and again for everything you've put into the lyrics. I think your voice is maturing and developing into a beautifully unique style. I love the different 'genres' you evoke with each song." Karen Six, Vernon BC --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "I'm the one who told you after your set at the (Vancouver Isl) MusicFest that I think you are better than (someone famous who sings but doesn't play bass)... especially on the bass. Great voice and fun and wise 'use' of words. I loved "Grinnin' In Y'r face/ I got My Way" and the way anything you sing comes out a jazz number. Female jazz singers are my primary listening pleasure" Shirley Miller, Courtenay BC ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Regarding 'Outer Bass' "... express my gratitude to you for sending that CD of you and your band, I played it over and over for a couple of weeks, your voice is so sultry and lilting, “your gonna go places doll”." Valerie Dreisen, Leduc AB ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Now you are one cool chick" regarding playing bass/singing , fan at the Bowen Rd Farmers Market, 2008 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “My music career up to this point has been like an old Bently running out of gas. Spurts of loud, serious progress mixed with stalling points. I have played music professionally for 13 years-the last 5 have been with the Double Bass. The Bently finally found a trustworthy Gas station.” Dinah D ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Nothing Fancy, just cheap Martinis" ad for gig on Gabriola Island ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "hip and cheeky with a touch of class" fan at Dinah D's Contraband Swingclub 'Most Definitely Live' (recorded live show for album) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Who the hell are you really?" fan at live show that became the album 'Most Definitely Live' by Dinah D's Contraband Swingclub
