I grew up in the Deep South and then went off to college during the late sixties, a time of social unrest and political upheaval, where I studied political science and learned a lot, in the streets and in the classroom. After getting a doctorate, I moved to Las Vegas in 1977 to teach American government courses at UNLV. I married a colleague in the History Department, Dr. Thomas C. Wright and we’ve recently celebrated our 27th anniversary; Tom specializes in Spain and Latin America. I ran successfully for the State Senate from District 7 in 1988, became Minority Leader in 1992, and am currently serving on the Finance and Government Affairs Committees. My priorities include education, renewable energy, ethics, and environmental protection. I also ran for Governor in 2006 and came very close despite being outspent 3 to 1. It was a wonderful experience and I enjoyed traveling around Nevada meeting and talking with all kinds of people, from ranchers to show girls. I am the Democratic National Committeewoman for Nevada and am excited about Nevada being an early caucus state. Lots of presidential candidates are vying for our attention. On a more personal note, I have 2 cats, a fire engine red 1976 TR6, and a collection of crèches from around the world. I enjoy reading, traveling, crossword puzzles, and tap dancing. I have a sister who lives in Las Vegas with her husband and lots of animals including 4 llamas, goats, rabbits, dogs, cats, and tortoises. Her house is like a petting zoo. My parents, Joe and Betty, spend half their time in Las Vegas and half in Georgia.
