FEATURED EVENTS

SONS OF ABRAHAM
FRIDAY 10TH JULY 8PM/$10

Melbourne three-piece Sons of Abraham are more serious about their music than genre titles. Their music is a collaboration of song ideas and grooves which have evolved continually over an extensive period of jamming and live performances, before finally settling into their current form. The tracks as heard on the 2008 debut EP “The Pushing Foreword” were recorded with the intention of reflecting on the live dynamic and to highlight strengths rather than cover weaknesses. Originally launched at the Ding Dong Lounge mid 2008, SOA now return to the ‘Dong’ with support from Rainbird, The Committal and Anember for one massive night of varied dynamic Rock. Friday 10th July, Ding Dong Lounge, Market Lane, City. Doors open at 8pm, SOA hit the stage at 11pm. ‘The Pushing Foreword’ is available for download on iTunes or at the shows if you want the real thing. www.myspace.com/sonsofabrahamband
Supported by RAINBIRD, THE COMMITAL, ANEMBER.

NICK STYLES - ALBUM LAUNCH
THURSDAY 16TH JULY 8PM/$7

“Hillbilly Pop,” is the debut album for singer songwriter Nick Styles. Recorded in December ‘08, and following a 2005 EP, the album represents Nick’s live set, ranging from the stripped back acoustic solo to a full band accompanying. Country, Blues and Folk influences can be heard throughout the album together with strong lyrics influenced by time spent living between Country Victoria and Melbourne city. Born and raised in country Victoria, Nick was influenced by his father, a country rock musician and was introduced to writing through his mother a poet and author. Musical influences growing up came from listening to a wide variety from American Country such as Hank Williams, Willie Nelson and Roger Miller, singer songwriters like John Martin, Bob Dylan and Tom Waits, and 50’s 60’s and 70’s rock n roll. Styles is set to launch his Debut album Thursday the 16th of July at The Ding Dong lounge in Melbourne.

ROWLAND S. HOWARD w/ BAND
POSTPONED...

Rowland will be playing another 'exclusive band' show at Ding Dong Lounge on Saturday 18th July, showcasing material from the long anticipated new Album! he line-up features HUGO CRAN (DEVASTATIONS) on drums, and J.P. SHILO (HUNGRY GHOSTS) on bass. Rowland, an Australian legendary rock musician, guitarist and songwriter, is best known as a member of Melbourne's 70/80's new wave band BOYS NEXT DOOR/THE BIRTHDAY PARTY (NICK CAVE), & Howard received international acclaim for writing underground hit, the ballad "Shivers". When the band evolved into THE BIRTHDAY PARTY, Howard's aggressive use of distortion and audio feedback was one distinctive element in the group's "assault" on their audience. The Birthday Party relocated to Germany in 1982, where they became a progressively experimental group, in part due to their art rock leanings, which were developed in the band's formative years. He then went on to form many ohter bands/& projects since including his collaborations with Lydia Lunch and Nikki Sudden, & indie band These Immortal Souls, based in Europe and active through the late 1980s and early 1990s. Currently, Rowland S. Howard lives in Melbourne, Australia and produces and performs occasionally, to the delight of a small, self-renewing audience who consider Howard to be a member of Australian underground rock royalty. Having recently come off the back of the ATP tour, curated by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, this will be Rowlands last Melbourne performance before heading off to Japan for the 'FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL!' He will be showcasing new material from his soon to be released album...don't miss it!!

KISSCHASY - SINGLE LAUNCH
TUESDAY 28TH JULY 8PM

An armchair, a coffee table, a lamp, a fireplace, a phone and a bookshelf. Sounds like your average lounge room yeah? Well, not quite. Add an exploding TV, a weeping statue of Mary and an undisclosed amount of flying red liquid engulfing the room and you have GENERATION WHY the brand new video from KISSCHASY. This electrifying new video is directed by Mathematics - the brains trust behind the latest Empire of the Sun & Hilltop Hoods clips.Written during a year where songwriter/frontman Darren Cordeux says he got “ripped off, pissed off, bored and watched a lot of TV” the deliberately chaotic scene that unfolds in the clip reflects the ‘armchair philosopher’ concept that inspired GENERATION WHY. “It’s about people who love to complain” Darren says. “People that constantly whine about things that they really have no intention of doing anything about. Being negative is the best. Really we could all do a lot more about the state of the world. So it’s just a little commentary on society.” The new video from KISSCHASY will have its exclusive worldwide premiere on You Tube this Friday June 26 at 9am AEST via www.kisschasy.com. To celebrate the release of GENERATION WHY, KISSCHASY will launch their brand new single in superb style – playing shows at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory on Thursday July 23 and at Melbourne’s Ding Dong Lounge on Tuesday July 28. Tickets are $20 and includes a copy of the single GENERATION WHY (or you can purchase a ticket without the single for $18). GENERATION WHY – the ode to whingers everywhere. Being negative is the best? You decide.

THE SNOWDROPPERS (SYD) - CD LAUNCH
SATURDAY 22ND AUGUST 8PM/$12

The Snowdroppers came together in the third quarter of 2007, a group of fucked up misfits and STD carriers with one thing in common; the desire to introduce the blues to a new generation of fans. Realising they were in fact four clean-limbed honkeys, they decided to mix things up a little, which seemed to work in their favour, as their first ever show drew 1300 paying audience members. Of the 1300, only half asked for their money back - thanks in part, to their ribald songs about fornication and intoxication, and by drawing inspiration from the old blues and country masters of the American south.Taking their name from Sydney 1920’s slang term for cocaine addicts, The Snowdroppers delight in delivering something dark and thrillingly nostalgic, and by adding their own unique interpretations (and bastardisations) of the genre, the sound is unique and fresh with original material and a modern stage presence. With an ear for the past and an eye for the future, The Snowdroppers are guaranteed to bring something greatly needed to the Australian music scene... an enema. www.myspace.com/snowdroppers

KRAM!
FRIDAY 4TH SEPTEMBER 8PM

For the first time since debuting his solo album Mix Tape live at the Meredith Music Festival in December 08, Spiderbait’s hirsute co-vocalist and percussive lynchpin Kram will showcase tracks from the new album with the help of well known Melbourne musicians Andre Warhurst (Spoonful/ Silvernight Drive), Ash Naylor (Even) and Dale Hudack (Jackson Firebird). Kram and the guys will play exclusive shows in Sydney & Melbourne in April. One listen to 'Mix Tape' – released March 14th on Universal Music– and you’ll grasp exactly what he means. The 15 tracks veer from spooky Prince-like soul (Burnin’ Sands) and storming fuzz rock (Good Love) to melancholic country ballads (Won’t Be Home Tonight) and funky pop jams that could be a lo-fi Scissor Sisters (Satellite). It’s an eclectic, invigorating collection of songs that fits with its creator’s clear intentions. Mix Tape gives him the freedom to explore new perspectives. The instrumental palette is sparse but unexpectedly audacious, while the lyrics have a hitherto unheard focus. Mix Tape is a potent reminder of how Kram has long been a creative force. And now the public’s taste for bold, genre-hopping albums has finally caught up with his idiosyncratic outlook. The result, according to Kram, is the soundtrack for a road trip, with each tune moving you down the road and across the musical spectrum.

With the success of Cherry (Melbourne's first CBD rock'n'roll bar) comes The Ding Dong Lounge - the sister bar to New York City's very own of the same name. The Ding Dong Lounge is filling the void in Melbourne's rock'n'roll scene - sure we got the venues and plenty of bands that want the limelight, but now comes a mid-sized venue that can be your after work drinking hole or a place to see some of the scene's best local and international bands.

The Ding Dong Lounge is nestled in the centre of Chinatown, but never before has a rock bar existed on this strip. The emphasis is on good music, definitely no electronica and stars a host of young DJs spinning the decks with everything from The Ramones, Television, T-Rex, The Runaways, AC/DC, Turbonegro, Iggy & The Stooges and a stack more vintage and contemporary rock to salute you.

According to one of the bar's owners Bill Walsh, Cherry has outgrown its capacity to cater for its rock'n'roll crowd - there's just too many thirsty rock pigs wanting to pack the one den. But now its surrogate sister on the block, The Ding Dong Lounge, has joined the stable to lend a hand. "Instead of waiting for someone else to open up another rock bar we thought we would do it," says Walsh.

Rock'n'roll has stomped all over LA's Sunset Strip and New York's Bowery and East Village for decades. It's indeed obvious that rock fans in Melbourne have craved a similar social set-up - a hangout that exists outside of pubs and extends beyond alternative radio stations. Ding Dong isn't claiming to rewrite history and it doesn't preach to be the new cool - it's simply a venue that's helping keep rock where it needs to be. "We have identified a need in Melbourne for a larger rock'n'roll bar which encompasses all things Cherry including good drinks, friendly staff and great music. All this will be prevalent at the Ding Dong Lounge," says Walsh.

The Ding Dong Lounge in New York City is a dimly lit bar, decorated in band posters, cuckoo clocks, cosy corners and a spacious dancing area. Beer is poured from taps that are made from used guitar and bass necks. Bands that have played there include the Demolition Doll Rods, Cosmic Psychos, The Real Kids and the Lyres.

According to Steve Naidich, who owns Ding Dong New York with partner Bill Nolan, their bar is one of a last dying breed in the city. "It's really old school New York - people in the know, "know". There are no neon signs outside, there's no advertising, and no fanfare. But once you've found it, you're back every night, you're telling everybody you know about it. That's what keeps people coming back."

Walsh was approached by his New York friends Bill Nolan and Steve Naidich to open a sister bar in Australia - they chose Melbourne because it is driven by the same sophisticated rock appreciation that NYC is renowned for. "We liked the New York connection because of the similarities in good music, they are both stylish cities and people in both places have a similar taste in this kind of venue," says Walsh. "The Ding Dong Lounge in the two greatest cities on the planet? What's not to like? But not sure that we like the idea of putting vegemite in the Bloody Mary's," says Naidich. "We're working on a Ding Dong Bagdad!!"

The concept of a rock bar is just that, a concept to many fly-by-night opportunists, but the Ding Dong is something more than a concept. "There will always be a need for the counter-culture place to be subverse and rock out," says Naidich. "It's punk versus disco. The real trend in NYC right now is the fancy lounge. But there's something phoney, fly-by-night about these places. They're not going to be around in five years." "There's so many electronic lounge bars in Melbourne," adds Walsh.
