- Francis Voignier, the winner of the DIP competition.
From the melodic minimalism and smoking Les Paul of Ace Frehley to the slippery two-handed tapping of Eddie Van Halen, the funky riffing of Nuno Bettencourt and the quirky humour of Steve Vai, I've loved the sound and the visuals of an electric guitar since I was a little kid.
I grew up in the hard rocking 80's and I finally picked up a guitar myself at the age of 15 in 1989 – a year when Joe Satriani released his epic "Flying In a Blue Dream" and Paul Gilbert started his monthly "Terrifying Guitar 101" column in Guitar Player magazine.
I'm a self-taught musician, and I owe a lot to the guitar magazines – Guitar for the Practising Musician, Guitar Player and Guitar World in particular. The first riff that I ever wrote was based on the chord shapes I'd learned from Reb Beach's "On Tap" column in Guitar World.
The music I write is mostly instrumental rock, with hints of blues, country and even heavy metal in there as well. I do feel that this is the type of music where my creativity is flowing the most.
My main goal for DIP is to make compact and catchy guitar-driven instrumentals enjoyable for those outside the guitar community as well. I have no need to try to show off – I just want you to dig the groove.
The songs presented here are strictly demos, recorded by yours truly in the comfort of my home mini-studio. If you have any questions or comments, I'd love to hear them – your comments are always appreciated.
I'm fortunate to have found such a group of musicians who love what they do, take practising seriously and have a great sense of humor. It's my pleasure to introduce…
A bass player whose early influences included the likes of Geezer Butler and Steve Harris, Janne had already been dabbling with a guitar when finally becoming a bass player at the age of 17 – simply because the band he was in needed one.
A drummer with a wide variety of influences from Buddy Rich to Vinnie Appice to Dave Weckl to Terry Bozzio, Jyri has had the drum sticks glued to his hands ever since his mother got fed up with her then 8 year old son's habit of constantly banging everything from kettles to couch pillows and decided to get him some education on drumming.
A guitar player influenced by the progressive and neo-classical players like Alex Lifeson, Steve Howe, Yngwie Malmsteen and Andy La Rocque, Olli-Pekka dabbled with various instruments from acoustic guitar to drums and keyboard as a little kid, but there was no turning back after he got his hands on his older brother's electric guitar at the age of 10.
We are currently rehearsing on a weekly basis and perfecting the set list of 8-10 original instrumental songs in order to bring the DIP experience live on stage by the spring of 2010.
Until then... Turn it up loud! Juha
I see you've redone a few things around the page! But perhaps I hadn't noticed the last time I was around! Thanks for the wonderful feedback on the song, it really means a lot! I had fun with the whammy and I sort of dig the out-of-tune effect... I used the Kramer with the Floyd Rose for the solos and a Gibson Les Paul for the rhythm tracks (one clean and one crunchy). Thanks for using "the winning caption" for the "sounds like" section, it's a nice touch and it made me smile! ;-)) Have a great rest of the week, and I hope you find more time to pick up the guitar beside rehearsals, but I know how that goes!
Hi Juha! Man........its been a while since my last visit....! Hope you are doing well and things are allright!!!
I've my X-mas song 2009 called "Echo Bells on x-mas day" here on myspace.......so uf you ever have the time ,please take a listen this Tune is slightly different from the others..........;-)
Haha, you're not the first to have noticed the folk/Voltophonix influence on "Time To Know". :-p And yes, it's definitely got some Voltophonix-y vibe to it. I used a capo for the rhythm guitars, which is something I picked up from Brendan. Now that you mention it, I think I can hear a little bit of Nuno here and there as well, lol. Well, I take that as a compliment obviously. :-)
Oh, the percussion on "Time To Know"? That's just me playing the pads real-time, lol. See, another thing I got into over the summer was djembe playing. I just wanted to get something similar happening in this song, and just recorded myself tapping the pads of my drum machine real-time to the rest of the parts. Thanks for the compliment on the pic, btw. lol :-p
joo, mitens ässä sen sanoikaan, että "I don't do it (kokkeli, olettaisin) any more, but it's a great song" :) ja mikä kenties hienointa oli taustabändin yhdenmukaiset ässä-pöksyt :D
Hi Juha, I am really happy to hear that things have been going well with the band. Also, it's great you had a swell time at the Green Day concert in London, it's amazing how these guys have evolved over time. As I said to you, I heard them when they first started in the Bay Area, a bit shaky at first, but their convictions and political stand soon help them define what they are today; a great rock band with a message! I can't wait to hear the tune you had produced in London, as a matter of fact, I should scoot onto your page to make sure you don't have it posted yet, that would be embarrassing... Have a great week, bro! Cheers, Francis
Hey Juha, thanks for checking out the new tune and the positive feedback. You know I ALWAYS appreciate that. It helps keep me going musically. You're not the first one to reference the Ozzman. I definitely have that nasally twang thang in the voice but I don't know how to get rid of it! LOL That's why I consider myself a guitar player and not a singer! hahaha But it is fun ~ another way to express one's self. I'm looking very much forward to hearing more details about this mix/master thing in London you have going. I'm sure you'll give us all the details when you're ready. Have you recovered from the Pink concert yet? Enjoy the rest of your weekend Heman helsinkiläinen! Sheldon
Hey Juha! how's that POGII pedal treating you? Are you dialing in some hair-raising, mind-blowing, face-melting sounds on it?!? hahaha Anyway, just wanted to drop in and say "Hi!" Take care ~ talk to ya later Sheldon
Thanks Juha, I'm not planning on auditioning for ZZ Top so I think I'll shave!;-) Lol!!! I am so glad about your band, really! And I am sure we shall soon hear the outstanding results! Ah, Green Day, a band from my neck of the woods!!! Why they wouldn't play Finland is beyond my comprehension...! Maybe Finland has a problem with Green Day being so politically "in your face"... But most likely it has something to do with tour logistics and budget. At any rate, you and your wife have a hell of a time in London, and please tell London hi for me, because I miss the damned city from the depth of my heart! It will be real nice touching bases again, bro! Have a safe and magical trip! Cheers, Francis
hey J, cant remember if i got back to you man! yeah all fine my end still no recording just playing really. Just trying to improve slowly!, the news sounds good your end mate you got many gigs lined up for your project?? J
Hello Juha, just bought the Boss ME-70, great pedal with cool sounds that I like (I do the programming myself ofcourse ;-) ). I'm getting slowly there writing new songs (for my rock/metal band T.A.R), got an amazing dummer, bass-player and singer (all brothers).
So I hope to get the songs up around januari/februari on my myspace. Still got to write songs for my personal myspace with the great singer Phil Vincent, I'm finally getting busy with my songs.
Did a lot of recording stuff the last 8 weeks, now I have to mix all these songs for 3 bands.
I see that you are rehearsing to get ready with your instrumental songs for some live gigs. Great news, maybe you can come overhere to do some live shows?? ;-)
Haw things going , just got back from the gig and it was great ! hope your doing oke, and playing like hell;) it's buzzy man working on my event Guitarblast for the students .
but the music is great here Juha love your playing and song's !
Thanks for the comments. I agree with you, I could have re visited the beginning melody on Wah. Yeah, it was improvised. ( minus the first melody ) The challenge on that tune was layering about 6 guitars and making them audible in the mix. Chillin was just messing around with a bass lick I came up with. lol.
Glad you liked Sam Street. I think the song is brilliant. Very different from the style I normally play.
That's great news! A second guitarist is hard to find, even more so if you want him/her to be able to pull off some of the technical stuff. Congrats! And yes, DO keep me informed! I'm curious about the "cool news" you're speaking of, lol.
As a matter of fact, today IS the last day I will spend in Vancouver as I am flying back to Japan tomorrow! It's been pretty crazy around here this morning, and I'm being harassed by my mom to pack!! :-p
