The sound of one foot clapping. Seriously, it depends upon who is playing at the moment!
'Directive 4' is an ever-evolving project originally conceived by Boston area drummer/engineer Geoff Chase back in 1997. The idea was to get together and experiment with selected combinations of musicians that might otherwise never play together, and just 'see what happens'. The idea kicked around for a while, until schedules freed up enough to work it out.
The first session was in late August 1999, and the result is what you are hearing right now (titled "Initialize" - all improvised on the spot, the very first thing we ever played together). Listen to parts 1-4 in sequence to hear this lengthy jam in its entirety. That's Jeff Miller on bass, and Scott Collins on guitar. This was also one of the very first recordings engineered by Geoff Chase (Fostex 460 4-track cassette).
Since then, there have been sessions with several different bass players - the guitar duties most often being handled by Scott Collins, but sometimes by Steve Genovese.
When Scott Collins brought in bassist/multi-instrumentalist Joe Rauen and vocalist Patty Barkas one day in 2003, the seeds were sewn for a whole new project called TubTime .
More recordings under the 'Directive 4' banner are expected in the future - hopefully sometime in 2009!

Ah, joyous cacophony, I love it! This stuff puts a big ol' smile on my face. I miss hearing the playing of Geoff and Jeff, two of my favorite musicians.
