  • Bio

"I'm a 40something-year-old guy that loves to make music, who loves to play the bass. That's all I do since the age of 20. I like all kinds of music, whether it's jazz or rock or pop. I like huge cars, watching and doing sports, nutella, snow in winter... and the sun in the summer."

  • Influences

About Dirk Blümlein Terzett. I have been writing songs on the bass for a long time and was thinking of a way how to play them. After a long time of trial and error this is it. A small group that can easily play in any place. The music is based on parts that are heavily constructed and parts that are free. Partly a jazz and partly a pop approach. Songs in the player "4" Very intricate number by Andreas Francke. By the time we recorded it we were hardly capable of playing it. Now we are getting better at it....haha. "Ganze Hosen" Inspired by a quote from the guy that owns the bar across the street from my place. His child grows up and is now old enough to go from shorts to full pants. What a great phrase I thought and went to work on this song that is here on my computer for years but with having a title now it's easily completed. "Behind The Moon" First of three tracks from "Fette Beute" written by Andreas Francke. Great melody!! I like it very much. "Frohsinn Feuerbach" That'ss the name of a former vocal ensemble in a Stuttgart suburb called Feuerbach. "Frohsinn" equals "good mood" what a great name. Found it on a pic on the wall of a pub when I was hiking the Schwäbische Alb. "In Heimsheim daheim sein" It's the first song of the new cd "Freizeitvergnügen". The title is a silly wordgame about a small village close to where I live. "Mieses Essen, keine Frauen" As a Star Trek fan, I found this phrase said by commander Riker and thought it would make a great title for a song. Like "6 und 4 ist 10", the bass plays everything except for the drum part. There are also sounds of my car like doorslamming and blinker clicks that make rhythmic elements throughout the tune. "6 und 4 ist 10" A few basses and a drumbeat. Plus the voice of a stewardess from Lithuanian Airlines that adds some rhythm. "Wo geht's zum Bahnhof" This song was originally written for a movie. It is played during a scene where a guy stands at the grave of his friend. Unfortunately the scene was too short, so I had to rush the song. When I was making the Terzett CD I took the opportunity to play this song in a tempo it should be played. "Tour de France" Written while watching sports on tv. I always practice while watching sports on TV. Guess what was on?!

Biography

Dirk picked up the flute at age 8, switched to the trumpet at age 10 and got heavily into bassplaying at age 13, when he wanted to form a band with his friends and all that was missing was a bassplayer.
He graduated from music school in 1999 and has ever since been constantly working as a full-time musician.
He has toured Europe with the ska-band "No Sports", is a member of the pop-band "Fools Garden", released 2 solo albums and 3 cd's with his own band, the "Dirk Blümlein Terzett".

Dirk's comments on "Fette Beute" tracks:

1 Ganze Hosen
Inspired by a quote from the guy that owns the bar across the street from my place. His child grows up and is now old enough to go from shorts to full pants. What a great phrase I thought and went towork on this song that is here on my computer for years but with having a title now it's easily completed.

2 Sommer Sonne Kaltgetränk
Just a try of getting fully chordal with the bass, playing it "rhythm guitar style". Happy little sing a long piece.

3 Behind The Moon
First of three tracks written by Andreas Francke. Great melody!! I like it very much.

4 La Rossa
The title is inspired by the city of Bologna... one of its nicknames is La Rossa because of its red buildings all over the centre.First I wanted to write a trilogy about Bologna... calling it La Rossa, La Dotta and La Grassa. haha! So this is the first movement of it. Maybe there is more on the next album.

5 So klärt der Schotte
Thatis a phrase I caught from a famous German sports commentator: Wolf Dieter Poschmann. He was commenting a Europe League game Glasgow vs Stuttgart. When a scot defender went to work very rudely, those were his words...

6 Mehr hören als sehen
Tricky little number with lots of flageoletts and a great melody. Probabbly the hardest one to get it right.

7 Kurzstrecke
Just a little bass intro piece into Frohsinn Feuerbach. "Kurzstrecke" is what you have to pay if you only go for max 3 station on a Stuttgart bus.

8 Frohsinn Feuerbach
That's the name of a former vocal ensemble in a Stuttgart suburb called Feuerbach. "Frohsinn" equals "good mood", what a great name. Found it on a pic on the wall of a pub when I was hiking the Schwäbische Alb.

9 4
Very intricate number by Andreas Francke. By the time we recorded it, we were hardly capable of playing it. Now we are getting better at it....haha.

10 It's Not The Moon
This track was also on the last album, but we thought, we can do it better and put it on here, in a slightly other version.

11 La Rossa Clarinet
Same number like no. 4. This was the demo that I recorded with Andreas on the clarinet. I liked it so much I had to put it on here. Recorded in my living room.

12 Alles im Lot
Just for something different, a little number we didn't play live like the rest of the record. I put it together in the studio, using looped drums that I took from Eckhard's playing. Lots of overdubs here. Just to have another soundscape after all this trio stuff.
