| General | a brief history of
DISASSEMBLANCE
Good evening, and welcome to my fevered psychotic
mind. My name is B.E. Hart, your cartoonist, and guide
through the strange, and sometimes frightening, world of
Disassemblance. A cartoon world where a band of sub-
culture misfits come together to fight ignorance and
intolerance, wherever they might find it.
I honestly wish I could say that the idea for
Disassemblance came from happiness and joyful things...
but in reality, the concept came to me at one of the darkest
times in my life. On the way to grab a razor blade to
introduce to my wrists, I happened upon a sketch pad.
On that pad was scribbled a character I had drawn the night
before. "Ethan", as he would later be called, looked up at
me and, for the first time in what seemed like years, I
laughed. So much of the darkness that filled my eyes,
dissipated. At a time when I had no idea of who I was,
or what I should be doing, I felt a sense of purpose and
direction. To this day, I tell people that Ethan saved my life,
and that the creation of Disassemblance is nothing more
than me repaying the favor.
Though it is quite truthful that Disassemblance is somewhat based on my own
childhood experiences as an outcast, it is a falsehood to suggest that the characters
portrayed in the cartoons are based on actual people in my life. In reality, each
character is best described as being a single facet of my fractured psyche. Their
actions and interactions are a metaphor of my own meta-cognition and search for
self-actualization. Also, the characters represent societal "arche-types" I have found
in my own life, and through the experiences of others.
On the deepest level, this is therapy for me, one of many artistic pursuits I have to
explore life, the world, and myself. I hope those who view my work can find special
meaning in their own lives -- to join me in my pursuit to understand our places in the
universe. I want only to reach people, help them to find themselves, to find their
own means of self-expression and, if need be, have Ethan help them find their way
through the darkness, as he had done for me so long ago.
However, even if all people ever get out of Disassemblance is a chuckle, a smile,
and a little thought provocation, then my little comic strip will be more successful
than I could have ever dreamed -- Thank you, Enjoy.
