Living life 2 its fullest with as few limitations as possible. I think they call it freedom. Still working on that.
Music
Almost any genre (a little shaky on Bluegrass). Just don't put no Doobie in my Funk. I like it live, soulful, and hard!
Movies
Lost Boys, Interview With A Vampire, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Dusk 2 Dawn, Fright Night, Near Dark, Blade I, II & III (there's no pattern there! What R U talkin' about!?!), Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill I&II, The Star Wars series I-VI (except 4 that dumb-a** ep 1. What gah-bage!), Hero, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Something the Lord Made, The Last Samurai (despite my misgivings on the nature of the film), V, The Spook That Sat By the Door, Harlem Nights, She Hate Me, & Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The last Batman installment was pretty phat and the Dolphin's song in Hitchhikers Guide To the Universe made a good movie off the friggin' chain; "So long and thanks 4 all the fish..." The new Dark Knight, Iron Man, and Hulk all make the new cut.
Television
The Simpsons and 24. No other reason 2 turn that thing on (except that Malcolm in the Middle is kinda live).
Books
Triple Take, Apostles, and Slippin' by Y. Blak Moore, Gathering of Old Men by Ernest Gaines, and the Spook Who Sat By the Door by Sam Greenlee. Non-fiction everything.
I am Discopoet Khari B. affectionately known 2 those who've attended my shows as "the Black Superhero" (<-- I love that!). Generally put, I am a Spoken Word Soul Artist, a performance poet of sorts that has welded searing spoken word 2 equally fiery live music. That combination has set me apart from many of my contemporaries although I fully realize that I'm not doing anything new (Gil Scott Heron, Eugene McDaniels, Madhubuti, etc). I'm simply carrying on a grand tradition. I'm just a bit more energetic and wild with mine!
We make music/poetry 2 uplift, educate, celebrate, and condemn (sometimes all in the same poem), that fills the void that has been made in quality, nourishing entertainment from the corporate xeroxed music machine and this quick fix/quantity-not-quality society that has risen up around us in the last 10-20 years. We R the answer and it feels good
This innovative, rebellious spirit has also made it difficult 4 others 2 classify what I do thereby making it a tad difficult 2 get the kind of bookings that I crave. But what can I do but move forward anyway and keep giving the people and this career everything I've got. It's been a wild road and it just keeps getting better. No complaints, just smiles. It's what I do so I keep on doing it. And not so surprising, the people love it!
Dig on my music page at http://www.myspace.com/kharib. Yeah, I initially had all this stuff mixed up. SO CHECK ME OUT NOW! ;)
Who I'd like to meet: ...George Clinton, Macy Gray, anybody who has the interest and doe 2 book my shows in all their different forms, other folks true 2 their art and hearts yet successful in that endeavor and just genuine folk who work 2 improve the world around them N some way.
