What does the the city of Philadelphia sound like today?
Listen to the Discount Heroes and you will know right away. Like the city that
they call home, the band's sound is a eclectic mix of styles which combine to
form something greater than the sum of its parts.
Philadelphia is an old city with a wealth of art, culture
and history. Likewise, There is beauty, elegance and timelessness in the
melodies and vocal harmonies that singer Frank Tartaglia and backing
vocalist/rhythm guitarist Rob Ogus create . It isn't difficult to imagine
that if Simon and Garfunkel began their career now instead of in the '60s, they
very well might come up with a song like "Brake Lights". The
electric intensity of Ron Bauman's lead guitar playing channels the grit of
Philadelphia's streets. This is a blue collar town and this band has nothing
fake or pretentious about them. You can see this in Drummer Joe
"Brown" Tartaglia’s style of playing. He keeps it simple and delivers
beats that perfectly compliment whatever the group is playing at that moment,
whether it be a slow, soulful ballad, an upbeat pop tune or a no holds barred
"rocker".
Put all of these qualities together, combine that with the
fact that each band member adds his own distinct musical influences to the mix
and you might get a sense of the diversity of their sound. The Discount Heroes
don't care about what other bands sound like. They play what sounds good to
to them. LIke fellow Philadelphians Dr. Dog and Hall and Oates, the Discount
Heroes' songs encompass many different styles and there is a timelessness in
their music. Trends quickly come and go in the music business but this band
writes songs that can not be identified with a specific time period or musical
trend. With the glut of one-off bands trying to capitalize on whatever sound
or style is popular at the moment, this is a refreshing change for people who
genuinely like to hear good music.
The Discount Heroes have three recordings under their belt: an
eight song acoustic demo, a full length eponymously titled album and "Who
Are The Discount Heroes", a five song EP that first paired the band with a
great production team at Sine Studios. Ultimately this paved the way for a
deal with Sine Studios to record, release and distribute a new CD that the band
is currently working on. The group has earned its stage stripes by playing just
about every small to mid-sized venue in and around Phildelphia since 2007 with
out of town gigs in New York and Delaware and a four gig run through Viriginia
and North Carolina. Listen to the Discount Heroes – whether online or on
tour – and you will hear why the music these four guys from Philly make is so
unique and so from it … and “from it” means good..
