Four teenagers out of California have released a record that has been completely ignored by the entire outside music world. What listeners do not know is that they are missing out on perhaps the finest release of 2004. Distance From Afar skillfully incorporates sing-along choruses with a harder edge comprised of passionate screams and intense guitar riffs to produce ten tracks of pure excitement. They have the makings to be the next big thing as their sound vocally compares to a more aggressive Rufio with the complex instrumentation of bands such as A Static Lullaby, Brand New, and Thursday. Most surprisingly, they have yet to sign with any record label, making them my and soon to be yours - favorite independent band. The Many Faces of You is Distance From Afars second release and first full length. It begins with a slow paced, but vocally impressive introduction titled Urban Flooding which smoothly transitions into the fist pumping track that follows. Killing Someone Has Never Crossed My Mind initially uses a pounding bass drum along with stylistic guitar riffs to lure the listener. Arguably the best song on the CD, this track showcases virtuoso guitar lines, driving drumbeats, and simply amazing vocals. However, the most notable aspect of this song is the three part vocal harmony found midway. The lead vocal line projects beautifully over the distant screams that sharply accentuate the same lyrics as a secondary melody also accompanies. By using a three singer approach, Distance From Afar is able to successfully meld each voice together in manner which will leave listeners singing along and begging for more. To their satisfaction, each song on The Many Faces of You possesses a unique quality. For example, Oh, Why Dont You Just Stifle It displays hardcore screams and powerful breakdowns in contrast to songs such as The Course We Take Is Always The Same, which exhibit more enhanced vocals and a high register guitar melody. Despite the dark nature of their song titles, the lyrics and music do not have an overly depressing or negative quality but moreover a high energy, distinct characteristic. Lovers Are Killers demonstrates the lead singers ability to sweeten his voice and show musical maturity. Next is yet another standout track titled Emotions Kept Inside. This track is the most similar to Rufio but rises above their contemporary with the catchiest chorus on the entire album backed by ideal backing vocals, drumbeats, and guitar solos. The Many Faces of You conludes with 9 Out of 200, an acoustic masterpiece, that beautifully sings And all I want is to hear your voice, Its all so nice, And exactly what I need. The previous lyrics are only a sampling of what Distance From Afar has to offer as they have the potential to occupy your away message for quite some time. Take note because Distance From Afar will be taking the music scene by surprise in the near future. Heed this as an early warning and be the first wave of listeners to fall for Distance From Afar. Rarely does a band create a perfect fusion of music and beauty, yet Distance From Afar has succeeded. Rating: 4 Stars
