Was diese österreichisch-ungarisch-türkische Band mit dem komplizierten Untertitel spielt, ist eine wunderbare Mischung aus kräftiger, archaischer Vokalmusik und Tanzmusik in unterschiedlichsten Rhythmen, die das Publikum sofort auf die Tanzfläche zieht...
Zur Bandbreite verhilft teils der biografische Background der MusikerInnen, teils musikalisches Gespür und langjährige Auseinandersetzung mit ganz unterschiedlichen Musikstilen. DIVAN TULIP spielt Traditionelles in neuen Arrangements ebenso wie Eigenkompositionen mit Griff zu interessanten Melodien und ungewöhnlichen Rhythmen.
Bei ihren Interpretationen experimentiert DIVAN TULIP mit originalen Klangfarben und versucht unter Einsatz stilfremder Elemente und Improvisation diesen zu entlocken, was immer nur geht, ob (süd)ost(europäischer) Blues oder rockige Elemente, Hauptsache „dreckig“.
Die Anziehungskraft traditioneller Musik ist in Mittel- und Osteuropa groß und nicht nur im ländlichen Raum, sondern auch in den Metropolen, wo auch ein junges urbanes Publikum zu diesen Klängen tanzt. ZuhörerInnen in Westeuropa sind oft fasziniert von den vielfach immer noch unbekannten Skalen und Rhythmen und der starken Rolle von Gesang und Improvisation.
DIVAN TULIP wurde 2007 gegründet und gibt seit 2008 regelmäßig Konzerte. MusikerInnen: Julia Rhomberg (Vocals, Furulya), Stefan Manges (Akkordeon), Peter Hochrainer (Kontrabass), Kadircan Kasapoglu (Percussion, Vocals), Johannes Stötter (Violine, Bouzouki)

DIVAN TULIP - hungarian eastern european turkish balkan!
This Austrian-Hungarian-Turkish band with the complicated subtitle plays a wonderful blend of full-blooded archaic vocal and dance music that gets a party mood going in 10 minutes.
The group’s regional breadth has come about partially through the musicians’ biographical background, but also due to their musical sensibility and long-term critical engagement with very different musical styles. As a result, DIVAN TULIPtulip plays traditional music in new arrangements as well as playing their own compositions, all with a good feel for interesting melodies and unusual rhythms.
In their interpretations, the band prefers to create a nicely raunchy original sound, undercut with improvisations and elements from other styles, but nevertheless to avoid the all-too heavy mixture of styles associated with world music since, in recent years, world music has frequently been experimented with in an attempt to interpret folk in new ways, especially in Central, Southern and Eastern Europe.
In any case, the musicians do not want to reproduce the Baltkan (i.e., Russian) disco sound, which is what is best known and most popular here in the West. Although this sound has popularized many interesting melodies this side of the iron curtain, in the band’s opinion, it represents only a fragment of the harmonic and rhythmical treasures this large region has to offer. This is, they feel, really a shame since there is still a lot which the so-called West could learn about the so-called East.
And just because so little of it is known, not even to mention the regional differences, the band, consisting of its founders Stefan Manges (accordion) and Julia Rhomberg (vocals, furulya) plus the percussionist Kadircan Kasapoglu (percussion, vocals), the double-bass player Peter Hochrainer and the Violin/ Bouzouki player Johannes Stötter, play not only the popular pieces but always bring in something new.
But that’s not all, because DIVAN TULIP also plays and sings their own wonderful compositions, taking inspiration from many sources…actually to be more precise, one would have to say that the musicians write the vocals, variations, and improvisations for all the pieces themselves, but nobody actually writes it. Things are tried out and played.
