The broad mission of DiverseArts Culture Works is to promote and expand cultural awareness and appreciation of the arts in Austin, Texas. Through our various component projects we address the arts, in general, with a view that is multicultural and multidisciplinary in scope. However, our strongest programming efforts are directed to the traditional music and culture of African Americans.

Heroes
~ HAROLD McMILLAN is proud father of 9-year-old son, Hayes Michael McMillan, and 13-year-old adolescent god-child, DiverseArts Cultural Works. Within the broad scope of DiverseArts mission, Harold functions as publisher, editor, writer, festival and concert producer, record producer, documentarian, cultural historian, gallery curator, grant writer, and performing musician. As concert and festival producer, McMillan and Diversearts have presented some real legends (HEROES) over the years, including Jimmy Smith, Bobby Bradford, Roy Hargrove, Stefon Harris, Ray Barreto, Irvin Mayfield, Jason and Ellis Marsalis, McCoy Tyner, Nicholas Peyton, Oliver Lake, Kenny Garrett and many others. Harold also cleans the bathroom and washes all the dirty dishes the rest of us leave around. When he's not out fighting the man and promoting multicultural artists around Austin, he can be found shooting pool and drinking whiskey at the LongBranch Inn.

...a State of Texas Chartered tax-exempt, non-profit corporation. Founded in 1994 by cultural historian-musician Harold McMillan, DiverseArts Production Group brought together a full season of multi-arts programming under one organizational structure.
Initially DiverseArts' annual season consisted of the Clarksville Jazz and Arts Festival, African American History Month Concert Series, Blues Family Tree Project (begun in 1989), Women in Jazz Concert Series, and The Austin Acoustic Music Festival. In late 1994 McMillan founded Austin Downtown Arts Magazine and launched a series of visual arts programs: the DiverseArts Little Gallery Exhibition Series.
Throughout the 1990s and into the new century DiverseArts and McMillan have pushed for innovative cultural programming and arts advocacy, focusing especially on the appreciation, presentation, and preservation of African American music.
After a catatrophic fire destroyed their GuadalupeArts offices in 2005, DiverseArts headquarters moved temporarily to McMillan's home. Now, with the support of local developer Perry Lorenz, DiverseArts has found a new home at Saltillo Lofts, a new complex at the corner of 5th and Comal. This new art space, The New East Arts Gallery, houses the DiverseArts offices and hosts a series of art and photography exhibitions throughout the year.
The current DiverseArts programming season and active projects include:
~ Word/jazz Performance Series ~ ~ Blues Family Tree Project and Documentary ~ East End Fourth Fridays! ~ East End Summer Music Series ~ New East Gallery Exhibition Series
