The New Normal
Curated by Michael Connor
Jan. 15-Feb. 20, 2019
Co-organized with by iCI (Independent Curators International), New York and Artists Space, New York, and circulated by iCI
DiverseWorks Main Gallery
Heightened surveillance, characterized by the spread of public cameras, luggage searches, Internet monitoring and wiretapping, has become an inescapable global condition. These supported deterrents to terrorist activity were dubbed "the new normal" by U.S. vice president Dick Cheney after the 9/11 attacks in 2001. Curated by Michael Connor and featuring Sophie Calle, Mohamed Camara, Hasan Elahi, Eyebeam R & D/ Jonah Peretti & Michael Frumin, Kota Ezawa, Miranda July and Harrell Fletcher, Guthrie Lonergan, Jill Magid, Jennifer and Kevin McCoy, Trevor Paglen, Corinna Schnitt, Thomson & Craighead, Sharif Waked, The New Normal brings together thirteen recent artworks that use private information as raw material and subject matter. Each of the works in the exhibition-video, Web sites, sculpture, artist's books, found objects, and photographs-grants access to the private sphere of the artist themselves, of strangers and of public officials.Movies
So Percussion
Imaginary City
Feb. 12 & 13, 2010
Commissioned by DiverseWorks with Myrna Loy Center/ Helena, Flynn Center for the Performing Arts and National Performance Network
The New York Times described Sō Percussion as “brilliant” and Billboard Magazine called them “Astonishing.” Imaginary City is the newest work by Brooklyn’s Sō Percussion. The virtuosos of So Percussion create mind-expanding chamber music that is at turns raucous and touching, barbarous and heartfelt. They have collaborated with filmmaker Jenise Treuting to capture the sounds and images of several cities – from Treuting’s home in Tokyo to the vast skies of Helena, MT; to the mountains of Denver, CO; through the heartland of Cleveland, OH and the New England landscape of Burlington, VT and to the urban jungle of Houston. to emphasize the uniqueness and commonalities between the various cities. The performance will center around Sō Percussion’s utilization of percussion instruments to communicate the extremes of emotion and musical possibility. Imaginary City takes the experimentation one step further with music based partially on invented instruments, blurring the lines between sound and vision to create an artistic metropolis.Television

Zoosphere
March 12 - April 17, 2010
Opening Reception: Friday, March 12, 6-8pm Commissioned by DiverseWorks for FotoFest 2010
Zoosphere is a transcendent, site-specific installation investigating humankind’s relationship to the natural world. In her first ever immersive video installation, Hunter upends the power dynamic between the human and non-human animal within a dark, mazelike environment in which the man and beast co-mingle. Drawing on the experience of a visit to the zoo, audiences will travel through a a subdivided series of exhibition galleries filled with life-size projections of zoo animals devoid of any natural animal sounds (trumpeting elephants, birds in flight, herding zebras, barking sea lions, etc.) Against the backdrop of a rapidly shifting ecological landscape in which species across the globe are threatened with extinction, Zoosphere reconnects humanity with the beauty and wonder of the animal kingdom and forces us to examine our relationship with and responsibility to it.Heroes
The Yes Men
Infiltrating Capitalism with The Yes Men
April 30-June 5, 2010
Opening Reception: Friday, April 30, 6-8pm
Commissioned by DiverseWorks with Myrna Loy Center/ Helena, Flynn Center for the Performing Arts and National Performance Network
Considered among the most important political artists of the last decade, The Yes Men (Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bobano) are a group of culture-jamming activists who practice what they call “Identity Correction.” By posing as spokespersons for prominent organizations and powerful entities, The Yes Men create spoof websites and appear in conferences and TV shows to highlight how corporations and government organizations often act in dehumanizing ways toward the public. Keep it Slick: Infiltrating Capitalism with The Yes Men exhibits The Yes Men's practice through elaborate costumes fabricated for their bold interventions, slapstick videos and PowerPoint presentations at business conferences, outrageous posters and props, scripts, sketches, research materials and selected publications and ephemera from their personal collections.
