The Star Wars stories are largely inspired by the writings of Joseph Campbell, the great philosopher and teacher of the world’s religions. Campbell was particularly interested in the yogis. The training of a jedi knight was based on the training one undergoes in any eastern spiritual art whether tai chi, kung fu, or yoga: transcending physical prowess into mental prowess. According to the Jedi and the yogis, when one attains this mental strength, she captures the essence of the Force. Obi Wan Kanobe describes the Force, “The force is an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together.”
The Force is manifest in all the incredible things that happen without human intervention. A baby forms in the womb all by itself; the mother simply houses the process conducted by the Force. A flower blooms as it will. A wave breaks as it desires. And a soul unfolds as it hopes... assuming the ego gives it room. With infinite patience, a wise human being allows this Force to guide him. In a world of heroes accomplishing the insurmountable, the humble surrender yields the sweetest feeling. As Yoda tells Luke Skywalker, “You can only tap the force when you are calm, at peace, passive. A Jedi uses the force for knowledge and defense, never for attack.”
