About me:
The Dixie Derby Girls are Alabama's first all girl, flat track roller derby
league, established in December 2004.
The Dixie Derby Girls Roller Derby League, LLC is dedicated to bringing this
long-lost sport to life in Huntsville. We are dedicated to running a safe, fun,
and professional league that gives girls of all shapes, sizes, and skill levels
a chance to enjoy roller derby. As members in good standing of the Women's
Flat Track Derby Association, we foster and promote the growth of flat-track
roller derby nationwide.

What the heck is roller
derby anyway? Isn't it fake, like professional wrestling? |

Roller
derby is a competitive, contact sport with no choreographing.
Theatrics are part of the game, but nothing is fake or scripted.
This is the only sport that brings together the love of roller
skating, fierce competition, and brawling, fishnet, miniskirt,
lipsticked melodrama!
The game is played in heats or "jams"
that can last up to 2 minutes. There are 3 fifteen minute game
periods (This is subject to change) with an unlimited number
of jams in each. Two teams play in each jam, with 5 players
in the rink for each team - the pack
Each pack starts with 1 pivot, 1 jammer,
and 3 blockers. The packs start with their pivots in front,
blockers in the middle, and jammers in the back. On the first
whistle, the packs take off, and on the second whistle, the
jammers fight their way through the pack in an attempt to become
the lead jammer. After lapping the packs once, the jammers receive
one point for each member of the opposing team that they pass.
The lead jammer can call off the jam at any time.

*Any girl
over 19 can play as long as she can make the time commitment
to practice and be involved with the League. Each skater must
also:
*Have Individual health or liability insurance. If you don't
have either, ask us - liability insurance is available.
*Train on and off the rink. Attendance at 75% of practices is
mandatory.
*Be Involved with off-rink activities, such as fundraisers and
promotions
*Purchase skates (quad speed skates, not inline) and protective
gear -we have connections through skateboarding and roller skating
shops to get reasonably priced gear.
*Understand that roller derby is a competitive, contact sport
and minor injuries are a part of the game.

Do I have to be an athlete?
I haven't skated in years! What if I'm out of shape? |
|
Doesn't
matter! Most of us hadn't been on skates since junior high before
joining the League. We train everyone from beginners to advanced
skaters, and we will help you any way we can. Just put on those
knee pads and take it slow at first, and practice, practice,
practice. Roller skating is a great workout! And we're looking
for skaters of all sizes and shapes - the main thing you need
is a desire to play!
