About me:

DJing for Dummies is OUT NOW!! The US release has been brought forward by a couple of weeks, and it's now available through Amazon.com.

First things first. Strangely enough, DJ Recess isn't my real name. If it was, you'd have to assume I'd have taken my mum to court for abuse a LONG time ago... My real name is John... John Steventon. Hello. And as to the DJ part of the name, I don't ever use that, but Recess was already taken on MySpace, so I went for the DJ part. So I'm known as John - or as Recess. Never Judy...

A quick diversion, if you don't mind. If you'd like to help me 'win' a PS3, could you click on this link? CLICK HERE I don't know if a click is enough, or if you need to sign up to it - but if you can help, I'll be eternally grateful :-)

I hope that I'm seen as a relatively good natured, calm kinda guy who doesn't let much stress me out. I'm more of a passive guy in real life, letting things happen, rather than affecting what's going to happen. I've always wondered if this means I'll be eaten by an angry bear, hoping someone else will help get him out of the way, but hey - I'll know that when it happens.

I'm now freelance as a TV editor, making it on my own (I hope) rather than working for a company. As this MySpace page is more about me as 'Recess' than my day life, I won't mention much about it here, but if you go to www.jklediting.com, you can find out more.

I've developed a bit of an addiction to Poker. I love playing home games with friends, and get a real kick out of playing. As that doesn't happen much, I tend to play .. more than home games. If you ever get the chance to look for DJRecess at with FullTilt or PokerStars, come give me a shout.

But it's DJ'ing that's where it's at. I've dedicated the past 11 years to teaching people how to DJ, through my website at www.recess.co.uk, and now I've written a book geared towards all you new DJ's out there, "DJing for Dummies" for the people who make Windows for dummies etc.

You can use these links to buy it, if you want... HERE to go to see it at Amazon UK or HERE to see it at Amazon.com

If you have bought it, and that's why you're here, I'd love to hear from you. If you've got any questions about the book (whether you've read it or not), please get in touch, and I'll do everything I can to help you out. C.ya R

How are ya finding Traktor John? Im trying to decide between Serato and Traktor, as I dont know whether to go for the longer established Serato, or Traktor which looks like having better options in future. Would you recommend Traktor? Cheers.

Thanks so much for the add.

Your book has been so helpful to me in the past year. My beatmatching skills are a lot better than they used to be ages ago, and you have a great sense of humour in your book too.

Thanks for the add. Back in 2004 I used your site as guidance when learning to DJ. I remember one evening I was frustrated as I was having difficulties beatmatching and I browsed your site again and just happened to come across the section DJ preparation for a gig and I thought I was years away from this or I probably wouldn't get there. Well with time I improved and in 2006 & 2007 I was involved in the Babycream DJ comps in Leeds & Liverpool were I reached the semi-final stage. Just wanted to say a big thank you, your site really helped.

I just wanna lay a big thanks to you recess. I dont know if u remember, but a while ago i came to u for advice as a person willing to start DJing (Jay), and you told me to just step up and do it. Well, as you can see by the new page, ive done it! I'm now working for a successful company and doing gigs in all sorts of venues. The best part is im doing something i'm passionate about. When your book comes out in Australia i'll be sure to buy it, and your webpage will do till then.

To those out there that want to follow the same line, I fully reccommend doing it. Step out of your comfort zone and go out there and do it. Its well worth the reward :)

Ah, the dude who helped me go from that "wanting to be a DJ" stage to "learning how to be a DJ"...

...that was almost 4 years ago now. Granted there was how to dj properly at a much later stage, but it was your site that helped in those initial baby steps the most. What was most encouraging was knowing that there was indeed a living, breathing human being behind it all.

Just wanted to say thanks!

Me giving your wife ideas?? Oh no! I just happen to believe that it is time for little Johns and Johnettes running around the house!!!! You two should at least have one kid because kids are a joy in everyone's life. Think about it.

May 19 2007 12:42 AM

Hi John. It's been a long while! I hope you and your wife are doing good. Any little Johns or Johnettes soon? You two should! You need to pass down the skills to someone else! Ahaha, I'm just messing.

Wel, I haven't found a good mixer that I like yet. Do you have any that you recommend or suggestions? And also, I'm aiming towards vinyls, cds, and mp3s. I like to mix them all. I love challenges even if I grow white hairs on my head. I'm getting my 1210s this weekend!!!! I'm so excited. ErrrrreEEKkkkkk!!

Well thanks man!. Yeah we have a small group of people over here contributing to the hardcore scene (Milo, Sunrize, Reese, No Left Turn, Drew Derivative, etc) but it's not as popular as in the UK. Hopefully we'll be able to change that over time. Great job with the website, you're the reason that I was able to learn how to DJ so quickly and I can't thank you enough for that!
