DJ AI-VA is everyday working Latvia’s hiphop/r&b and funk/breakbeat dj. Drawing his influences from Soul, Funk, Rock, Reggae, HipHop, Breakbeats DJ AI-VA extracts the essence of all these styles, blending and arranging them in a way that’s entertaining to his listeners.
After a few years’ practice at home, in 1991 AI-VA started playing at schools’ parties, small clubs and bars. In the 90’s DJ AI-VA plays tapes (reel-to-reel tapes were common in ex-soviet countries), later he switches to cd and vinyl. In late 90s together with Ozols and Gustavo, he is one of the first and very few hip hop party DJs in Latvia. At the same time, he is starting to organize first hiphop events: parties in various clubs in Latvia – “Pulkvedis”, “Jim Beam”, “4 Love & $”, “Ultra”, etc.
Has played with: Lord Jazz, Scratchator, Jazzy Jeff, Premier, Cash Money, etc, and with many local hiphop live acts. Has also played numerous sets at festivals, night clubs, bars and parties (Living Room (Oslo), Cosmo (Oslo), Fashion (FTV) Club (Riga), Illusion (Tartu), Prive (Tallinn), Pacha (Vilnius), Barongsai (Oslo), etc). Currently (for about 6 years) a resident in Latvia’s biggest (5 dancefloors) and most popular night club: „Essential” (www.essential.lv/dj/). AI-VA plays hip hop, r&b, funk, soul, breakbeats, baltimore club, mash up, favela, etc. Also holds residencies at clubs: Pulkvedis, Amber Night. As a travelling party rocker, he has played in many countries including neighbouring Lithuania and Estonia, as well as USA, Canada, Sweden, Norway, UK, Germany, etc.
AI-VA runs RI AGENCY (www.riagency.lv), a company which has hosted events with artists such as Wu Tang, Lord Jazz, Mattafix, amongst others. Company also works on festivals including biggest Graffiti festival in a region: BALTIC GRAFFITI FESTIVAL.
Since 2000, DJ AI-VA is producing weekly hip hop radio show with a loyal audience: THE REMIX SHOW (KNZ, Naba, now Radio QBS 97.3FM). The show had appearances/interviews from Rob Da Bank (Bestival); The Heavy (Ninja Tune); Deadelus (Ninja Tune); Tara De Long; Fatman Scoop; Harmonia & Danshall (Skwee); Grandmaster Flash amongst others.
AI-VA runs a music school Rhythm Institute (www.ritmainstituts.lv) with programms such as: cd, vinyl and radio DJ, music producer, vocals, percussions, etc.
