BIO
DJ Apt One is half of Philadelphyinz (along with Skinny Friedman), a duo of Pittsburgh ex-pats responsible for a series of thriving, genre-bending, anything-goes parties in Philadelphia and New York. With a taste for everything from club to pop to disco to rap to house, the two throw everything into the mix, from old classics to the floor destroyers of tomorrow.
Friends from Pittsburgh's thriving 90's hip-hop scene, Skinny Friedman and Apt One honed their craft as DJs and producers while at college in St. Louis and Philadelphia, respectively. Philadelphyinz (the Party) began when Skinny moved to Brooklyn after college and the two started up a monthly party in Philadelphia. The name is an homage to their west Pennsylvania roots: "yinz" is a contraction of "you ones" and is the Pittsburghese equivalent of the Southern "yall." As two dudes from Pittsburgh throwing down in Philadelphia, they combined the two concepts into Philadelphyinz.
Three years later, the original Philadelphyinz party at Medusa Lounge is still going strong, as is Apt and Skinny's monthly SPACE CAMP party at in New York City, as well as Metropolis, another recently-launched Philadelphia monthly at The Barbary.
Recently, Apt and Skinny have taken the Philadelphyinz sound all over the United States, playing in cities from coast to coast - almost 20 this year alone, including a 16-date national tour. Besides regularly appearing at Spank Rock's Jang House night, they've shared stages with The Rub, Diplo, the Flaming Lips, Blaqstarr, DJ Sega, Tittsworth, Peanut Butter Wolf, De La Soul, !!!, Dave Nada, Bonde do Role, Wale and more.
Philadelphyinz have also put in work as producers. Their "Pittsburgh Club Anthem" has become a staple at parties in their hometown and has seen spins on local top 40 stations and as in-game-entertainment at the Mellon Arena. Apt and Skinny's tracks have appeared on mixtapes by DJs Ayres, Mick Boogie, Benzi and Starkey and more. The two have made commissioned mixtapes for Quannum Records, Discobelle.net, Frank151 Magazine and more. Their production talents have brought them to work with everyone from rapper Wiz Khalifa to indie acts Hail Social and Cassettes Won't Listen.
RCMP, a new Apt One side project (along with Pittsburgh producer Relative Q), pays tribute to the freewheeling dance sounds of the early electrodisco age. The project is due for vinyl release in 2009.
