Too many to mention but I acknowledge Ska/Bluebeat, Reggae, Jungle, Bashment, Soca, Disco, Groove, Funk, Soul, Gospel, Garage and House as the main sources of my sound. If its funky, if its soulful, if its got driving rhythms, if its got heart and spirit, I'll play it.
Sounds Like
My sound is broad and wide. It ranges from deep and soulful, through to driving beats of African and Latin grooves, through to the funkiest, phattest bassline.
DJ AYO (pronounced I-O). Ayo is a Yoruba name and means joy. It acknowledges my African roots and the joyful vibes I try to encourage on my nights. The name also acknowledges the joy I feel in being a God seeker, a Christ follower and a lover of the Spirit.
I have been djing and promoting events seriously for about three years now. However, I have been a party starter for years. As a youngster, I was invited to play at house parties because I always had choons. My music passions are/have been influenced by a party vibe and thus are very broad and wide including, but not limited to, Reggae, Ska, Disco, Soca, Soul, Funk, Hip Hop (the non sexist conscious kind) and Nu-Gospel. (My tastes may be broad but I'm afraid rock and country are really not my bag!) However, my absolute favourite music is deep, funky and inspirational soulful house.
As you can see from the photo I am a vicar or a dj vicar. Although I like to say I'm a minister of sound! My role is to explore a different way of doing church that might appeal to people like myself who connect with the 'Big G' through dance music rather than 'Songs of Praise'! So, instead of doing Sunday morning services or weddings, funerals and christenings, I promote a number of bar/club nights in South Birmingham as well as in the centre including REVIV'IN at the RED BAR & LOUNGE. I hope that some form of community may grow out of these events eventually but in the end its about good times, good music and positive spiritual vibes.
Finally, I present a show on a local community radio station. The Show is called 'Soul Food' and is on every Sunday morning from 2am GMT. Check us out on Newstyle Radio 98.7FM if you are local to Birmingham, UK or online at www.newstyleradio.co.uk
